ALBUM REVIEW: Stratovarius – Survive

It’s been seven long years since Finnish power metal act Stratovarius released their previous studio album, Eternal. With so much happening in the world since then, it really does feel like an eternity. Although far from the Utopian dream, 2015 was just a much more pleasant place to live. Two hugely polarising world leaders/scandal enthusiasts were yet to come to power, pandemics only affected other people, and we still had David Bowie, Prince, and (for most of it anyway) Lemmy.

Dirty Honey to Perform their New Prince Cover at the NHL Winter Classic in Minneapolis

The National Hockey League (NHL) will hold its annual outdoor showcase on New Year’s Day 2022 this weekend in Minneapolis. Dirty Honey, will perform as part of TNT’s event coverage. Filmed on one of Minnesota’s iconic frozen lakes and directed by Turner Sports’ Tyler Lassiter and Craig Murray, the band – Marc LaBelle/vocals, John Notto/guitar, Justin Smolian/bass, and Corey Coverstone/drums – will wrap up the Pre-Game coverage with their interpretation of hometown hero and rock icon Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy.”

Lansdowne Street in Boston, MA in October. It’s either extremely noisy and busy or it’s completely silent, in this instance it was the former rather than the later. Because we have Angels & Airwaves playing at the House of Blues the very same night that the Red Sox are facing the Houston Astros in the ALCS championship series… On the exact same street. We have baseball fans and music fans thrown together and it was pure magic. It’s gonna be a fun night, let’s dive right in.

Local H Shares “Brandy (You’re A Fine Girl)” from Their Upcoming Covers Album

Alt-rock legends Local H have shared an awesome cover of 1970s classic Looking Glass’s track “Brandy (You’re A Fine Girl” from their forthcoming covers album: Local H’s Awesome Quarantine Mix-Tape #3. The album is releasing October 8th 2021 on Brutal Panda. The album is the third in the series of covers and gives a nod to the mixtapes in Marvel’s Guardians of The Galaxy! The new album features two different covers of Prince’s “When Doves Cry,” and they’ve also taken on songs from Fountains Of Wayne, Blondie, the Kinks, Mark Lanegan, Eurythmics, and Robert Plant. The band is hitting the road with fellow 1990s icons Soul Asylum, and Juliana Hatfield. Check out  “Brandy (You’re A Fine Girl)” right now!

Chris Cornell’s Widow Says Unreleased Soundgarden Music “Will See The Light of Day”

Last week the estate of Chris Cornell surprise dropped a covers album, touted to be the final studio recordings of Chris, No One Sings Like You Anymore. Recorded by Chris in 2016, the LP features his renditions of John Lennon’s “Watching The Wheels”, Ghostland Observatory’s “Sad Sad City”, Harry Nilsson’s “Jump Into The Fire”, Carl Hall’s “You Don’t Know Nothing About Love”, Electric Light Orchestra’s “Showdown”, Terry Reid’s “To Be Treated Rite”, Lorraine Ellison’s “Stay With Me Baby” (originally released for HBO’s show “Vinyl”), “Get It While You Can”, popularized by Janis Joplin, and a new studio recording of “Nothing Compares 2 U”, written by Prince. Chris’s cover of Guns N’ Roses’ “Patience.” As reported by Blabbermouth.net, in a new interview with USA today promoting the album, Vicky Cornell was asked if more of Chris’ music would see the light of day.

Montreal Sludge band Seum release a horrifically evil-sounding cover of Prince’s “The Marrying Kind” – from the album Musicology, as a Halloween treat for fans. The bands’ name means Venom in Arabic and is French slang for disappointment and frustration which is the most 2020 thing possible. The band comprised of three French Doom metal scene ex-pats, living in Canada, and the new cover single follows their recent EP Summer of Seum out now via their Bandcamp.com.

The 1980s were a curious time for music. It was one of the most creative and cool times ever for all kinds of music from Rock, Heavy metal, Pop, Hip-Hop, and Dance Music. Art and music is an expression of society and what people are feeling, and rarely just artists pushing their opinions on fans. But forces were aligning against personal freedom, especially in the United States Government and the Parents Music Resource Center (The P.M.R.C.) led by Tipper Gore, wife of Senator and later Vice President Al Gore; Susan Baker, wife of Treasury Secretary James Baker; Pam Howar, wife of Washington realtor Raymond Howar; and Sally Nevius, wife of former Washington City Council Chairman John Nevius.
