On the Road… with The Black Dahlia Murder

2015 indiemerchtrour Black Dahlia Murder second leg usa

For over a decade IndieMerchStore has been an indispensable partner to bands and record labels as a great place to sell band merchandise and music. You may not know this, but many bands only make money off of stuff they sell on tour and with the prowess and power of IndieMerchStore, they have a partner with a vested interest in making online sales easy and seamless. In the time since the company formed, they have also been a great help to the touring industry, sponsoring huge tours all the way down to small, get-in-the-van type artists. This holds especially true for underground bands in rock, metal, and death metal. So to celebrate their 10th year the brand booked a tour featuring death metal acolytes The Black Dahlia Murder and a cadre of killer bands. These tours also represented TBDM’s first tours in support of their recent album Abysmal (Metal Blade)  Booked in two legs across the USA, the recently completed second leg featured Goatwhore, Iron Reagan, Entheos and Artificial Brain. Each band brought their own special something to the tour. It was loud, it’s was sweaty and in general, everyone raged. Ghost Cult’s Meg Loyal of  Meg Loyal Photography caught up with the tour for us at The Sinclair in Boston, and you can see for yourself a sample the energy delivered each night.

Audio: The Black Dahlia Murder – Abysmal Full Album Stream

black dahlia murder abysmal

Modern death metal masters The Black Dahlia Murder are streaming their new album Abysmal, out this Friday, in full from Metal Blade Records’ website. You can hear the album at this link:

Front man Trevor Strnad commented on Abysmal:

“Once the record started to come together we knew it was going to be something special,” states vocalist Trevor Strnad. “It’s more urgent, it has more dynamics, it’s a more emotive record, and it has a more raw, angry sound to it. It’s still million mile-per-hour death metal, but when you invest so much thought and emotion into what you’re creating you end up with a record that does stand out, and we can hold our heads up high and say yeah, this is our best work.”

ALBUM REVIEW: Teenage Time Killers – Greatest Hits Vol.1

screen-shot-2015-05-06-at-12-23-51-pm

Have you ever heard an album so good you thought it was made just for you? Like someone reached into the great boombox in your brain and pulled out just what you wanted to hear? Well, Greatest Hits Vol. 1 (Rise Records) by Teenage Time Killers is that album for me. If you have yearned for some new tunes to come along and kick your ass back to 1988, then this music is for you. Masterminded by Mick Murphy (My Ruin, and Reed Mullen (Corrosion of Conformity), the core band is rounded out by the ubiquitous Dave Grohl and chipping in everything except lead vocals and Greg Anderson (Sunn O)))/Goatsnake) and his mighty axe. In addition to a cavalcade of former and current stars from across punk and metal, it’s an ambitious attempt to turn the idea of a supergroup on its head.

Certainly, a lot of hype has gone on about the assembled players, especially the vocalists. If you re thinking of Grohl’s Probot project, you are not far off. That was Grohl paying tribute to his metal heroes. TTK is all about paying tribute to a certain mindset. An era when writing fun, smart songs that hit you where you live was the norm. Mullen has put his distinctive angry yelp on many C.O.C. albums and does a fine job here on the opening track ‘Exploder’ and on ‘The Dead Hand’. ‘Exploder’ is just a classic punk track with all the whoa-oh-ohs you can handle. Second track ‘Crowned by the Light of The Sun’ sounds like an early-era Clutch song and thus Neil Fallon is right at home singing over some stone grooves. The most blistering track here is the thrash/punk ‘Hung Out To Dry’. Randy Blythe (Lamb of God) just slays the track with his parts.

teenage_time_killers_2015

Following these first salvos the rest of the album is a tad uneven in a few places, but on repeated listens the entire thing holds together well. Jello Biafra is predictably pissed off in the too-short ‘Ode to Hannity’. ‘Barrio’ featuring Matt Skiba of Alkaline Trio/Blink 182 has the second-best track on the album. It’s another fun old-school sing-a-long that is both fun and political. Mike IX (EyeHateGod), Tommy Victor (Prong/Danzig) and Tairrie B. Murphy (My Ruin) anchor the three of the remaining real standout tracks. While it’s great to have an album in 2015 with Lee Ving (Fear), Karl Agel (COC Blind/King Hitter) and Phil Rind (Sacred Reich) altogether, at times you wish the tracks were a little stronger. Although a little short of total greatness for all the meaningful names, Teenage Time Killers backed up having the stones to call this album Greatest Hits Vol 1.

Audio: The Black Dahlia Murder Stream New Song: Receipt

black dahlia murder abysmal

The Black Dahlia Murder streamed a new single today, ‘Receipt’, from their forthcoming album Abysmal. You can stream the track at this link at Revolver Magazine.

Abysmal released on September 18th from Metal Blade. Front man Trevor Strnad commented on ‘Receipt’:

“The song, ‘Receipt,’ is a very personal and emotional one for me. I wrote the lyrics in my darkest hour, when anxiety had bested me and self loathing had come to an ultimate head. I was alone. I felt like I couldn’t create anything, and I was about to lose all that in life that I hold dear to me to failure. The song was a cathartic release and I hope it can be some kind of help to someone out there who feels the same darkness. I truly love the song and I feel like its one of the best this band has ever written, and I thank you all for listening.”

Municipal Waste Frontman Launches Liquid Arson Hot Sauce

tony forestas liquid arson hot sauce

Municipal Waste and Iron Reagan frontman Tony Foresta has released a brand of signature hot sauce called Liquid Arson, which is a collaboration with the Tears of Joy Hot Sauce brand. It is available for purchase here.

Foresta commented:

“This is a collaberation with me and Brian from The mighty “Tears of Joy” Hot Sauce in Austin, Texas. I’ve been wanting to work with him for years as I’ve always been a big fan of his store and the sauces he makes, The Sword‘s “Tears of Fire”, His Tequila Lime Sauce, Red Fang‘s “Night Destroyer” to name a few. Liquid Arson is an Italian flavored sauce that packs a punch but still has a lot of flavor. Good with almost anything to me personally I think it goes best with meatball subs, pizza or chicken parm. It’s kind of like a nuclear marinara sauce.”
