ALBUM REVIEW: Uniform and The Body – Everything That Dies Someday Comes Back
US Sludge experimentalists The Body make such a habit of collaborative projects that one would think the duo aren’t overly happy in each other’s company. Everything That Dies Someday Comes Back (Sacred Bones Records) is the second such outing with US Industrial noiseniks Uniform and it contains every dystopian soundscape you’d expect.Continue reading

Killing Joke – RDF Live at KK’s Steel Mill, Wolverhampton
A single support in RDF (Radical Dance Faction) are in store for the hundred or so that are here with me by the time they come on stage, the numbers a touch disappointing for a gig that is sold out for the full tour. Against their name, their music is actually more eclectic Dub, making little sense at first in terms of who they are supporting, though this notion changes as they get further into their set, with a bit more of their stated Punk side coming out to play. While not awful, the audience around me doesn’t seem particularly engaged, with plenty of chatting going on, though there is some polite applause at the end of each track, while a few people do seem to genuinely enjoy some tracks. They occasionally bring on another vocalist to help out, though not to any particularly great effect. In all, a fairly forgettable support act, which is a shame given they have existed for over three decades at this point, as they just don’t feel right for the act they are supporting.Continue reading
Street Sects – Gentrification III: Death and Displacement
I’m not going to pretend to know much about Street Sects or their Gentrification serial album, but what I do know is that Gentrification III: Death and Displacement (The Flenser) is six minutes of fire breathing intensity and disjointed electronic sounds. In other words, I fucking love it. What I’m not entirely sure of is why the entire Gentrification movement isn’t available as one solid release?Continue reading
EXCLUSIVE: Stream Soaware’s Self-Titled New Album
Italian alt/electro-rock duo Soaware is releasing their new album, Soaware tomorrow. Founded by the duo of Damiano Bessi and Emanuele Grazioli, the inventive alternative rockers have hopes to infect the rest of the world with their songs. They first met in 1999 while playing in the band Mad Cobol, later splitting to join other groups. With Soaware, the band channels the familiar churning magnetic pulse of Industrial, the melancholy soulfulness of Goth, and the rawness of Metal. At the same time, they have experimental, undefinable elements that are purely Soaware music too. Stream their full album right now, only at Ghost Cult! Continue reading
HYDE – Anti
One of the best things about reviewing music, in my opinion, is having a music-savvy senior editor that encourages me to review music that is not in my wheelhouse. I have realized that if I was left to my own devices, I would likely stay in my little Heavy Metal utopia, reviewing only what I picked. I received the promo email from my editor about doing a review of Japanese act HYDE. Full disclosure, the only musical act I was familiar with from Japan was Babymetal. So, when I got the promo of HYDE’s new album, Anti, (UMG), I felt a tiny twinge of trepidation. After all, what do I know about Japanese music? Absolutely nada. How was I going to do a fair an accurate review of this music was my query. As soon as the first track off of Anti, started playing, all my fears of doing an inadequate review dissipated. The music that came pouring into my earbuds was the kind of music that bridges all humanity. HYDE’s music possesses a universal sound that almost any person can enjoy or relate to. On a personal note, I broke out in goosebumps from about 5 seconds into listening to the album, an involuntary reaction my body reserves for only the best soul touching music.Continue reading
Kollaps – Mechanical Christ
Melbourne Industrial trio Kollaps has something of a reputation for incendiary live shows bordering on the violent, so involved are the band members with the apocalyptic noise they produce. Second album Mechanical Christ (Cold Spring Records) is the depiction of a hopeless, senseless world society, and a progression from debut album Sibling Lovers (Silken Tofu).Continue reading
