Gorilla – Treecreeper

Perhaps it’s churlish at this point to note that UK Stoner Rock band Gorilla is being just a bit misleading with the title of its new album, Treecreeper. (Heavy Psych Sounds.) Put simply, gorillas don’t climb trees. Well, alright, juveniles and lighter adults have been observed to do so in the wild. But the metal-as-fuck silverbacks don’t, because they’re too heavy, MAAAAAN. Continue reading

Yawning Man – Macedonian Lines

Is there anything a band can really do without? Drummers and bassists are indispensable. Guitarists summon the magic and give the punters something to throw things at. Keyboardists? Well, sometimes they’re OK. The dude with the bagpipes? Folk Metal is the new Sex.Continue reading

Nebula – Holy Shit

Holy Shit (Heavy Psych Sounds) is really the album title you want to go with for your fifth LP, Nebula? Okay, I can dig it. Do you know what else I can dig? The sheer variety of riffs and leads being traded around by Eddie Glass and his groovy cohorts. It’s like if the man had been stockpiling sweet licks in a fallout shelter since the band’s inception in far more innocent 1997. Continue reading

Glitter Wizard – Opera Villains

In an age where the line between dewy-eyed nostalgia and unashamed imitation is becoming blurred – we’re looking at you Greta Van Fleet – bands who dare to cherry pick the sum parts of their heroes and plot an original course should be praised. Glitter Wizard, whose latest full-length outing – Opera Villains (Heavy Psych Sounds) – aims to hit the high notes from its wide range of influences, are a spandex-clad bunch of psychedelia-indebted miscreants who have set out to do just that. Continue reading

High Reeper – Higher Reeper

One of my more favorite quotable lines of recent memory comes from Avengers: Infinity War. Spoiler alert for those who have not seen it, or lived under a rock. When Thor meets the Guardians of the Galaxy, ends up on their ship The Milano, and engages in some snappy banter,, this is the thing tickling my funny bone. When Thor exclaims they need to proceed to Nidavellir, and when posed with the reply that’s a made-up word, he replies “All words are made up.” This is not only funny but it’s true! And it made me think about what else, music. Specifically how all sub-genres are made up and in context to all the music we hear. One year after their sizzling debut, it’s time to enjoy this bitching brand new and totally badass High Reeper album, Higher Reeper (Heavy Psych Sounds).Continue reading

Dead Witches – The Final Exorcism

If you’ve worn out your copy of Dopethrone (Rise Above) and have still got a hankering for a dirty heap of occult-themed Sabbath worship, you could do a lot worse than UK Doom outfit Dead Witches.Continue reading

Brant Bjork – Mankind Woman

Along with his Kyuss bandmates, Brant Bjork helped create and define Desert Rock. And, across a dozen more solo albums, he has stayed largely in the comfy confines of hazy, laid back stonerisms. Mankind Woman (Heavy Psych Sounds/RidingEasy), the man’s latest effort, feels like a man happy to jam whatever he’s fancies and put it out there.Continue reading
