ALBUM REVIEW: Dax Riggs – 7 Songs For Spiders

Let’s hope the Acid Bath reunion shows, bring more attention to Dax Riggs’ solo work. It’s been 13 years since his last release, and Riggs finds himself. Reigniting his songwriting magic on 7 Songs For Spiders (Fat Possum Records). This time around  Dax is backed by a three-piece band of grooving Cajuns who slither through these songs with a melancholic pulse, taking things back to his darker roots. The opening track “deceiver” finds a dream-laden haze hovering over his soulful speculation. It’s almost like gospel music for someone whose acid trip has been tempered by opiates. It picks up closer to what “We Sing of Only Blood or Love” let off, though more sonically layered. His trademark croon sounds as good as ever. Continue reading

Dax Riggs Shares New Single “Deceiver” – First New Album in Seven Years Coming Soon

Dax Riggs today announced his first new album in 15 years, 7 Songs For Spiders, will be released on January 24, 2025. He’s also shared lead single and album opener “deceiver,” which simmers from a heavy, droning start to a crushing, cacophonous end. “Some kind of country and western doom ballad concerning that little light inside each of us–a celebratory turning away from the darkness and hypocrisy of the established gods of old,” explains Riggs of the song. “Ain’t no great deceiver / ain’t no bride of jesus either.” Known for his otherworldly lyrics, folk metal ballardry, and a gift for capturing the beauty in darkness, Riggs first garnered a cult following during his early days with teenage death sludge band Acid Bath–one that’s stayed with him through the country punk garage folk of Deadboy & the Elephantmen as well as his soul-stirring solo work. In the years since his 2010 LP Say Goodnight to the World and 2007 LP We Sing of Only Blood or Love–which saw Riggs praised by Esquire, Decibel, SPIN, Paste, and The AV Club, among others–his whereabouts have been the subject of wild speculation. Truth be told, he was looking inside for the things that fall outside of the commercial realm. 7 Songs For Spiders is now available for pre-order.Continue reading

Twitching Tongues – World War Live

Print

Hardcore bruisers Twitching Tongues play belligerent metallic hardcore injected with elements of doom in this tasty live release. Raw and untamed, there are no click tracks or any post production tricks to shine up these gritty and nasty numbers. The balance on the album is impeccable, with every instrument given time to shine and just enough crowd noise. World War Live (Closed Casket Activities) flows well with enough atmosphere and crowd participation while being able to distinguish each instrument.

Recalling the solemn funeral hymns of Candlemass filtered through acts like New York’s Carnivore, there is little of these L.A. natives Californian sunshine to be had on this bleak release but that makes it all the better. Sure there are places where Colin Young’s voice is slightly off, but Twitching Tongues are a real band and seldom does this make a difference. Body blows like ‘Again And Again’ are fairly unremarkable but tracks like the soaring ‘Sleep’ shows what TT are all about, stomping doom riffage giving way to some dirty beatdowns. “I’ll be right back, I gotta take a piss” announces Young candidly. It’s a moment of levity between slabs of punishing downtuned aggression. It’s moments like that which sum up the dry sarcasm and acknowledge how pessimistic music can be uplifting and empowering, unlike the cretinus mosh-or-die machismo peddled by the likes of Emmure and company.

Recalling nineties stalwarts Life Of Agony, Twitching Tongues eschew generic thrash riffs, cries for unity and circle pits and the trappings of Metalcore which have overrun the scene with luddites in wife beater vests whose music can only convey anger and hatred. Their music is at once, sorrowful and full of regret but with uplifting melodies which will have hardcore fans punching the air.  Young’s delivery is soulful and full of character even recalling Acid Bath’s Dax Riggs mixing power with vulnerability.

Nine songs of spit, sweat and blood mark this as an above average dose of hardcore doom which should gather attention from the metal and hardcore communities alive. Respect.
