A Trust Unclean – Reality Relinquished EP

A Trust Unclean Album cover

It’s been a while since UK mob A Trust Unclean battered our eardrums, four years between EP’s to be precise. Seeking to jumpstart their career, they’re self-releasing an EP, Reality Relinquished, with a real Jack-Nicholson-head-stuck-through-a-hole-in-the-door Whitechapel savagery to announce their return, which, in the main, they do in style.

When A Trust Unclean get it right, like on ‘Feckless Tradition’, they’re a raging, swirling, diverse ADD mass of deathcored Slipknotisms, confident enough in breaking out into atmospheric progressive guitaring, enhanced by some delightful sci-fi leadwork that spirals back to a violent chug; ‘Perverse Agenda’ curls into a juddering violent Cryptopsy-ed verse, broken by ubiquitious slab-paced stomps, a refined melodic build to solo under the chorus.

Business continues to pick up as we traverse the core of the EP, Scott Horne demonstrates his percussive abilities, not overusing blasts or kicks, like the demon carriage driver only letting the hellhounds off the leash intermittently and when it’s best needed; such as on the title track where technical interchanges sputter before a riff that feels deliberately restrained at the leash is tightly reigned in before exploding into the chorus.

All this is a relief as the EP actually kicks off with a tired, cliché car-crash of deathcore 101 – electronic build into a stop/start staccato riff, downtuned tech metal riff-to-squeal, sub bass leading to a brainless breakdowns; it’s a disjointed mess. When hanging around the lowest common denominator end of deathcore this is by numbers, but fortunately, due to the frequency with which the band flit from idea to idea, this occurs, track one aside, at brief intervals only.

Arrangements can, at times, feel they’re borne from a “chuck it all in the blender” approach to song-writing, though this leads to songs taking unexpected and interesting turns and when A Trust Unclean are at their most progressive and creative is when they are at their best; sprinkling deathcore tropes on top, like a demonic piri-piri, rather than utilizing their more generic ideas as the main sauce.

Humangled – Prodromes of a Flatline

Humangled-PoaF-front

While Italian death metal has never been able to get a word in edgeways when competing with its rivals from Sweden or the USA, the genre is in ruder health these days due to the international success of acts such as Fleshgod Apocalypse and Hour of Penance. This resurgence in fortunes has led to a few old hands reforming for another crack of the whip and Tuscan stalwarts Humangled are one of them. Prodromes of a Flatline (Bakerteam) is the group’s second effort since 2010’s Fractal (Abyss) turned a few heads. So is it enough to gain them a seat at the big boys table?

Unfortunately the answer is a definite no. While their strand of death metal certainly packs a punch, most noticeably on opening track ‘Liberté, Égalité, Brutalité’, there is not only too little going on throughout Prodromes of a Flatline to merit repeated spins, but crucially nothing to make the band stand out from the crowd. There’s not enough of the technicality of Nile, the brutality of Cryptopsy or the catchiness of Deicide, so we are left with a rather unappetising lumpen stew of the most bog standard elements of death metal, bereft of flavour and passion.

Too often it feels that the band is just going through the motions, often with some rather forced and clumsy transitions between parts that really should have been ironed out in the recording studio. At worst they come across as simply derivative as on the Death-aping ‘Intimacy Curse’ and God knows what possessed them to record such a horrible cover of ‘To Mega Therion’ and tack it on the end of the record. At best they’re a support band that tries hard for twenty-five minutes with the occasional half-catchy riff. However, in this day and age, it’s certainly not worth reforming for

Returning to the fold are main songwriters Flo Mounier of CRYPTOPSY fame, master composer and guitarist Rune Eriksen of black thrashers AURA NOIR and ever-rising, multi-voiced growler Travis Ryan of CATTLE DECAPITATION. Bobby Koelble, whose jazz-influenced technique mixed with tinges of Eastern passion, brings a fresh flare into the sound. Depending mostly on what sounds like millions of notes being touched at ungraspable speed, Koelble is best known for his work with genre creating band DEATH, as he collaborated in creating their most revered record, Symbolic. Lastly, the solos of Brazilian guitarist Andreas Kisser from yet another genre defining band, SEPULTURA bring an emotion that is both chaotic and yet full of feeling, and whose whammy-bar twisting and dragged notes introduce a wicked counterpoint to Koelble’s style. Shimmering on the surface are the angelic sirens of Carmen Simoes formerly of the AVA INFERI and current MOONSPELL backing vocalist, who conjures a sense of depth to the song “Descent”.

The EP was recorded in various location and with multiple engineers. Most notably are Christian Donaldson, who recorded guitars and Drums in his Montreal Studio, the Grid. Vocals were recorded by Casey Smith and Jay Newman in New York, with additional vocals recorded by Sam Lathrem and Martin Rygiel in San Diego.
