Colt 48 – Negatives

Alternative Metal is considered by some in the Metal community to be the black sheep of the genre: bands like Breaking Benjamin, Disturbed, Sevendust and many others have seen mainstream success because of the accessible sound and simplistic yet catchy song structures which come with the genre. During the 00s, Alternative Metal exploded and has acted as the gateway for many listeners to discover the vast sonic ground which is under the banner of Metal. The question is: does Colt 48’s new release Negatives (independent release) have any merit now that those heydays are over?Continue reading

Chart-topping metal band Bad Wolves have received a Platinum record in the USA for their runaway hit “Zombie”, a cover of The Cranberries 1993 classic. Notably, the band is the first rock band to reach platinum for a 2018 release and the first since Imagine Dragons in 2017. The plaque was presented to Bad Wolves by their co-manager, Zoltan Bathory (Five Finger Death Punch), Eleven Seven Label Group CEO Allen Kovac, and promoters Larry and Fred Frank of Frank Productions/Live Nation prior to their set at the BB&T Pavilion in Camden, NJ. Normally at Ghost Cult, we don’t pay attention to charts, popularity or what a band sells, but this is a momentous moment for a metal band, and all the proceeds (over #$250,000 USD) from the single have gone to the children of singer Dolores O’Riordan, for whom the track is dedicated. Continue reading

Rock on the Range Live at Mapfre Stadium

What began at Crew Stadium in 2007 as a one day festival with 14 bands has evolved into a three-day festival with around 60 bands each year. Since its humble beginnings of Rock on the Range, it has sold out. In 2007, the fest sold out at only 30,000 tickets compared to this year’s 140,000 tickets. ROTR has become the “mecca” of rock fests on the east coast. Rockers AKA “Rangers” migrate by the thousands to Mapfre Stadium in Ohio from across the globe to attend. A spiritual pilgrimage of sorts for die-hard rock fans perhaps? I can only speak for myself, but it is an amazing experience to embrace the many cultures.

Shouts of joy and chants from all over, spurred on by local rock hype group “The Rockvillans”, were just the tip of what I was about to experience.
