Being a New York City guy, and a big kid at heart, I have always loved Coney Island. I never really equated it with shows, even with the concerts coming to the nearby baseball field and the new Ford Amphitheater on the Coney Island Boardwalk, right on the legendary beach. Since Coney is basically the end of NYC, I made the long trek out there with some friends for food and adult beverages first. After heading over to the venue, the big brick façade of the front-facing the beach doesn’t really give away the big open-air/tent vibes of the venue, with the ocean breeze and waves in the distance. As I found my seat, Ty Bryant and the Shakedown were winding down their set. Always a rocking fun time with him. Metal Allegiance, a supergroup of some of the greatest metal musicians in the world (Mike Portnoy, Alex Skolnick, David Ellefson, Mark Menghi) played New York City’s Brooklyn Bowl in order to celebrate Halloween 2018. The band played Black Sabbath’s classic debut, were joined by guests like Bobby Blitz of Overkill, and even performed in costume as Black Sabbath in 1969. Check out this EXCLUSIVE photo set by Julia Sariy Photography from the show. Metal Allegiance are supporting the release of their new album Metal Allegiance II: Power Drunk Majesty, out now on Nuclear Blast Records. The band will perform again on January 24th at their fifth annual Los Angeles area show. Details are below.
What began at Crew Stadium in 2007 as a one day festival with 14 bands has evolved into a three-day festival with around 60 bands each year. Since its humble beginnings of Rock on the Range, it has sold out. In 2007, the fest sold out at only 30,000 tickets compared to this year’s 140,000 tickets. ROTR has become the “mecca” of rock fests on the east coast. Rockers AKA “Rangers” migrate by the thousands to Mapfre Stadium in Ohio from across the globe to attend. A spiritual pilgrimage of sorts for die-hard rock fans perhaps? I can only speak for myself, but it is an amazing experience to embrace the many cultures.
