arcturus arcturian

Arcturus has signed with Prophecy Productions and will release their fifth full length studio album Arcturian on May 8, 2015.

Arcturus are legend. Unparalleled in creativity, musicianship and artistic approach since their foundation days, mastermind Steinar “Sverd” Johnsen and his cosmic crew consisting of past and present members of bands like Ulver, Mayhem, Dimmu Borgir, Borknagar and Ved Buens Ende have been dancing their very own tightrope between genius and madness ever since. With each of their releases being an interstellar journey of its own, and always ahead of their time, Arcturus can justifiably be labelled as the epitome of avant-garde metal.

Prophecy Productions feel honoured and are excited to welcome Arcturus to its artist roster and to accompany this milestone act on its upcoming enterprises. The first mutual work will be Arcturus’ fifth full-length studio album, “Arcturian“, which is scheduled for release on May 8th, 2015.

the gentle storm 2

Arjen Lucassen (Ayreon, Star One, Guilt Machine) and Anneke van Giersbergen (The Gathering, Devin Townsend Project) is streaming the music video for “Heart of Amsterdam,” off their debut album The Diary from their new band The Gentle Storm on March 24, 2015 via InsideOutMusic, here.

Anneke had this to say:

“‘Heart Of Amsterdam’ is a tribute to the city of Amsterdam, the home town of the story’s leading character Susanne. Seventeenth-century Amsterdam was a center of shipping, shipbuilding, and trade. Amsterdam flourished, and a wonderful city was the result. We shot the video in the centre of Amsterdam. It was freezing cold and I couldn’t move my fingers anymore during the last shots, but it was all worth it. I love how the video turned out!”

Arjen & Anneke recently launched a series of video updates on the album, and you can check them all out here.

Choosing Death: the Improbable History of Death Metal and Grindcore Book Out In April

choosing death book

Author Albert Mudrian (also editor in chief of Decibel Magazine) is celebrating the 10th anniversary of Choosing Death: the Improbable History of Death Metal and Grindcore with an expanded and revised edition, flaunting 100 additional pages of new content.

This fully redesigned hardcover version is the inaugural release of brand-new imprint Decibel Books, and will be limited to 3,000 hand-numbered copies. It boasts three new chapters (with new material interspersed among the original 10 chapters), over 50 new interviews (for a total of 200) and a new cover painting by legendary death metal artist Dan Seagrave, recalling elements of his classic Entombed and Morbid Angel album covers.

Now out of print, the original Choosing Death has been translated into seven different languages around the world. This exciting history, featuring an introduction by famed DJ John Peel, tells the two-decade-long history of grindcore and death metal through the eyes and ringing ears of the artists, producers and label owners who propelled them. Phil Anselmo (Down, ex-Pantera) called it “something special. This is a must-read for anyone who wants a comprehensive ‘who-did-what-when’ book. Thumbs up.”

The revised and expanded Choosing Death: The Improbable History of Death Metal and Grindcore is available for pre-order exclusively HERE. Books will ship the week of April 12th.

Gruesome Releasing Savageland In April

Death metal supergroup Gruesome will be releasing their debut album Savage Land in North America via Relapse Records on April 21st, 2015, April 17th in Germany, Benelux and Finland and April 20th in the UK, rest of the world on CD and digitally. Featuring within their bestial ranks members of Exhumed, Possessed, Malevolent Creation and Derketa, they are a supergroup of sorts paying homage to the game-changing sounds of Death’s early recordings.

Gruesome was born out of guitarist/vocalist Matt Harvey (Exhumed) and drummer Gus Rios‘ (Malevolent Creation) mutual involvement with the Death To All tours – Harvey serving as frontman for the original nine-member mini-tour and Rios performing “Baptized In Blood” and working with DTA drummer Sean Reinert on the following US tour where Exhumed filled in as support on a several dates. After discarding the idea of putting together another incarnation of DTA to focus exclusively on Death’s first two albums, Harvey half-jokingly suggested writing their own songs in that vein. It wasn’t long before the idea gained traction, and the “band” had five songs written. Rios later recruited Possessed guitarist Daniel Gonzalez and Derketa bassist Robin Mazen to record the material in Florida.

The result is the eight scathing tracks contained on Savage Land. Recorded by Rios and Gonzalez at Riversound Studios in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, mixed by Jarrett Pritchard at Mana Studios in St. Petersburg, Florida and including a guest guitar solo on “Closed Casket” by James Murphy as well as cover art by legendary illustrator Ed Repka (Death, Megadeth, Massacre, Athiest et el), Savage Land is a truly gruesome slab of late-’80s/early-’90s Florida-styled death metal.
