Maybeshewill Releasing Fair Youth February 24

maybeshewill

Leicester’s Maybeshewill is releasing their fourth full length release Fair Youth via Superball Music on February 24, 2015.

Band guitarist/keyboardist Jamie Ward took the production helm once again, and this time Maybeshewill vastly expands the pallet of sounds and instruments at their disposal. By working with live instrumentation wherever possible, but also augmenting the real with electronic flourishes, it is simultaneously the most and least organic Maybeshewill record to date. Fair Youth has been shaped largely by influences from outside the musical world they exist in – from washes of hazy Shoegaze guitars to glitchy Electronica; chopped and screwed Hip-Hop beats to ornate Chamber Pop orchestration, as well as countless other threads coming together. It’s the band re-imagined as a larger ensemble – a hundred year old grand piano, string and brass sections, an enormous old drum kit, glockenspiels, vibraphones and a sea of guitars – while still remaining a cohesive whole.

Autumn of 2015 will mark Maybeshewill’s live debut in North America, with dates to be announced at a future point in time.

…And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead – IX

In their 20 year history, Austin, Texas act …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead have never been a by the book kind of band, always shifting and turning in unpredictable directions. An incredibly hard band to pigeonhole, one that has over time been adorned tags such from hardcore, to prog, to indie rock and even mathcore; trying to quickly define this band is a waste of time.

This ‘trend’ of the unexpected continues on ninth album, IX (Superball Music), with songs that were originally intended for use in film and television as instrumentals, before the creative rivers flowed some more. Also surprisingly is how refined and near simplistic it all is (in comparison to previous work at least). Still far from being an AC/DC template like band but IX does relinquish their sense of indulgence and expansion for a more streamlined approach, somewhere between their punk influences and indie rock, with the merest suggestion of prog. ‘A Million Random Digits’ is one of the more up tempo moments and has an aggressive streak in comparison to the synth driven ‘Jaded Apostles’ that precedes it.

On the first instrumental effort, ‘How To Avoid Huge Ships’ is where we are reminded just how bombastic this band can be when they turn up the prog; with piano and strings bolstering and building the song over its course, bigger and bigger. It is in this latter half of the album where the band’s extravagant side rears its head again, with these instrumentals and the long players like ‘Lost In The Grand Scheme’, in contrast to the short and sharper blocks in the previous half.

IX is another turn in this band’s very winding road and one that sees many of their sides come together, and at times in an all new perspective. There are signs of their punk like volatility and their whimsical prog side and a little in between. Another fine addition to their already captivating catalogue; this band simply refuses to be boring.

UK-based instrumental rockers Maybeshewill have released a new video for their song ‘In Amber’, off of their new album Fair Youth (Superball Music) dropping on August 25th. The band will be celebrating with a massive headline show at The Garage in London on October 17th.

The band had some words to say to mark the occasion of their new album:

“As many of you may have gathered from various social media updates over the past year we’ve been working on a new record. It’s taken it’s time, but we’re very happy to say that it’s finally finished and we’re really, really happy with it.

Fair Youth was recorded at Seamus Wong and Park Farm studios with our very own Jamie Ward’s steady hand at the production helm once again, and was mastered last week by Mr. Tom Woodhead.

We’re also very excited to finally announce our first UK Headline show for what feels like a really, really long time. We’ll be playing downstairs at The Garage, London on 17th October. This is by far our biggest UK headline show to date, so we’d love you all to join us. We’ll do our best to make it as special as we possibly can, and of course we’ll be announcing some good friends as support in the very near future.

We’re unbelievably excited for what the next couple of years have in store, and we promise this is just the first of many shows that will become the ‘Fair Youth tour’.

See you all really soon,

Jim, Matt, John, Robin & Jamie – Maybeshewill”

Long Distance Calling – The Flood Inside

Long-Distance-Calling-The-Flood-InsideTwo years on since these German prog/instrumentalists released their 3rd and self titled effort there has been some significant change in the ranks. The departure of founding member Reimut vonn Bonn saw a shift in musical direction, and the joining to the fold of permanent vocalist Martin Fischer (previously, the sparse use of vocals were done by guest vocalists, most notably John Bush of Anthrax and Armored Saint fame).Continue reading
