Various Artists – Meantime Redux
Helmet will go down as one of the greatest and most influential bands ever. This fact is undisputed. Coming out of new York City at a time when a generation of bands bred on New York Hardcore values married to the talent of thrash bands (with some general avant-garde weirdness for good measure), Helmet stood out like a sore thumb of weirdness. Dave Lombardo Art Showcases At Los Angeles Gallery
Dave Lombardo (current Philm and formerly of Slayer drummer) debuted his rhythm on canvas to the public at Forgotten Saints in West Hollywood, CA Saturday, July 11, 2015. This collection is a collaboration with Los Angeles based creativity house SceneFour, who has previously collaborated with RZA (Wu Tang Clan), Bootsy Collins and Chuck D (Public Enemy), Jose Pasillas (Incubus), Page Hamilton (Helmet) and Yngwie Malmsteen, as well as previous gallery showcases with Steven Adler (Guns N Roses) and John 5 (Rob Zombie).
He appeared for an in person symposium for the public at two separate showcases, explaining each art piece which was created by being photographed in the dark using a special clear light producing drum stick, and capturing the rhythms to develop into each abstract artwork piece. Lombardo himself selected and named the dozen pieces within the collection. Each piece is numbered and signed.
Similar showings in New York and Paris (France) are in the works with announcements to come.

Foo Fighters Streaming Side Project Lieutenant’s Debut Album
Foo Fighters bassist Nate Mendel is streaming his solo project Lieutenant, which will be dropping their debut album If I Kill This Thing We’re All Going To Eat For A Week, out March 9, 2015 via Dine Alone Records.
Mendel has been a member of Foo Fighters since 1995 and never had time to explore a solo project before, saying,
“There’s never a right time! Schedules are always packed. There are always other commitments. So it was important I just bit the bullet and did this. Or maybe I never would.”
The album features guest appearances from Foo Fighters guitarist Chris Shiflett, Helmet frontman and guitarist Page Hamilton, Modest Mouse’s Joe Plummer and Jeremy Enigk from Sunny Day Real Estate.
Mendel plans to take Lieutenant out on a spring tour before he regroups with Foo Fighters for their massive summer trek.

Linkin Park – The Hunting Party
I’ve never been a fan of the phrase “guilty pleasure”. I think you either like something or you don’t, especially when it comes to music. Notwithstanding, admitting that you quite like Linkin Park is most definitely a time when the phrase can come in quite handy.
Since their debut album, the much purchased and much vaunted Hybrid Theory (Warner Bros.) graced us with its presence, Linkin Park have been a band for whom it has been very easy to dislike. Dependent on your point of view they have been described as “sell outs” “not metal” and, simply, “terrible”.
I’m not sure about whether The Hunting Party (Warner) is a return to rock as much as it is a return to Hybrid Theory– namely a bunch of highly efficient, energized songs that trade on all the leitmotifs that made this band famous and popular in the first place. And, you know what, I happen to think it’s alright, actually.
‘Keys to the Kingdom’ starts off in a fairly aggressive manner, the band seemingly re-energised and up for something akin to a fight. It’s as if they have reconciled themselves to the fact that they are never going to win over everyone and have settled for sounding, well, like Linkin Park.
If you don’t like Linkin Park, you’re unlikely to be swayed by the dozen tracks on offer here but, even if you are amongst the naysayers, you won’t fail to recognise that this is something approaching a return to the form that created the megastars in the first place. Of course, the entire record is filled with all the silly nonsense that you’ve come to expect from Messrs Bennington and co. Once again, the late 30-something multi-millionaires cast themselves in the role of eternal teenage outsiders railing against impending apocalypses, corrupt politicians and looking for the new horizons of better days etc.
Despite no cliché being actively overlooked, I still find myself warming to what’s on offer here. The debut single, the punchy and effervescent ‘Guilty All The Same’, with rap artist Rakim, has plenty of gusto and drive; second single, the more reflective ‘Until It’s Gone’ is, in the nicest possible way, ‘Numb’ part 2 which, to my mind, is no bad thing. Former System of a Down-er Darion Malakian turns in a really smart turn on one the album’s stronger cuts, the immigration tale of Rebellion; Page Hamilton and Tom Morello pop their heads and respective instruments in as well, which, as you all know, are also Very. Good. Things. Indeed.
I understand that I win no cool points on this one but I’m far too old to actually care about cool points. The Hunting Party is a highly polished and effective record. It is not a masterpiece, but neither is it a car crash. As an exercise in efficient, modern heavy metal, it’s pretty good. Yes, there, I said it. New Linkin Park album: pretty, pretty good.

Helmet Announces Betty: 20th Anniversary Shows in Europe
Seminal 90s New York metal band Helmet is doing a UK tour this fall in celebration of the 20th Anniversary of their album Betty (Interscope). The band will play the album in its entirety, as well as other hits from their illustrious career. Coming from New York City in the same late 80s avant-garde music scene that gave us Swans, John Zorn, pre-metal White Zombie, Prong, Band of Susans, Sonic Youth, and Unsane; Helmet melded raw NYHC with the pummeling grooves of metal, but with the artistry and intelligentsia of post-No Wave aesthetics. Led by Page Hamilton, Following their stellar hit albums Strap It On and In The Meantime, Helmet released Betty to their highest charting success ever. The band also toured the world constantly and released videos for ‘Milquetoast’ (also heard in the movie The Crow), ‘Biscuits for Smut’ and the memorable ‘Wilma’s Rainbow’. In the process of becoming on of the most important bands of their time, Helmet helped influence the growing post-rock/post-metal genre that is still being felt today.
