Deftones’ Career-Defining Album “White Pony” Turns 20
Success has a way of messing with a good band. First world problems compared to the millions of bands that never make it, sure. However, so often when an emerging band that has fast become a genre leader, big corporate record labels can foul up the flow. This was almost the case of White Pony by Deftones, and the case where the hype was lived up to by pencil pushers, bean counters, and greed almost wrecked the game. White Pony is the band’s pivotal third album, where they built off the stylistic changes that came in with Around The Fur (Maverick) and pushed their sound further than before. In the process, they severed themselves far from the Nu-Metal wave that was exploding at the time and firmly created a new camp of “Deftones Music” as a category. Andy Gill, Pioneering Post-Punk Guitarist of Gang of Four, Has Died, Age 64
More sad news as we move into the second month of the year. Legendary post-Punk and Brit Rock guitarist and producer Andy Gil has died after a short respiratory illness in London. He was just 64 years old. As a founding member of Gang of Four, Andy left an indelible mark on music with his style and songcraft. Gang of Four’s first few albums are seminal works in post-Punk and New Wave music and they continued to inspire and affect bands long after they were inactive in the scene. A ground-breaking composer and producer, he worked with artists including the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Stranglers, the Futureheads, Michael Hutchence, Bono, Therapy? and the Young Knives. The band had reunited (with Gill as the only original member) in recent years to much acclaim. His band has released a tribute via their publicist. Continue reading

Powerman 5000 To Embark On a “Tonight The Stars Revolt” 20th Anniversary Tour

Powerman 5000 will celebrate the 20th anniversary of its most successful album, Tonight The Stars Revolt!, by embarking on a three-week U.S. tour in June. The tour kicks off on June 12 in Colorado Springs and will end on July 5 in Lubbock. Released on July 20, 1999 by DreamWorks Records sold over one million copies and achieved platinum status. The bands’ most recent album, New Wave, was released in October 2017 via Pavement Entertainment.Continue reading

I’m not going to waste my time going over the importance of the band Bauhaus or how many musicians, artists, and writers their music has influenced since they began in 1978, instead I will assume that either you are already aware of their impact or, at the very least, you have a device that can provide you with some much-needed knowledge. Perhaps a smartphone. You know, the rectangular shaped overpriced object you hold out in front of you at a concert and watch the entire show on instead of experiencing it as it happens right in front of you. If you were in fact, paying attention to the stage and not the lit up screen on your phone you were treated to two of the original members of Bauhaus, Peter Murphy and David J., along with Mark Slutsky on drums and Mark Gemini Thwaite on guitar, powering through the entire first Bauhaus album In The Flat Field (4AD) followed by a healthy dose of classics from the bands catalog. Skraeckoedlan – Eorpe
Skraeckoedlan’s newest offering is entitled Eorpe (Fuzzorama) – or Earth for the non-Swedes. Eorpe is part Stoner, part psychedelic music, with much sounding like New Wave music from the eighties with modern production values. There’s a familiarity to the tone and pacing of the music that us old fogies will enjoy, but, it’s “out there” enough for younger listeners to turn on, tune in, and drop out – the blending works as it’s a relaxing non-offensive listen.Continue reading
