Listen to Khemmis’ Doom Metal Cover of Misfits Classic “Skulls”

One of the great releases for the latest “Free Bandcamp Day” on July, 3rd 2020 was Denver Doom Metal band Khemmis and their two-song release More Songs About Death Vol. 1. The EP follows April’s release Doomed Heavy Metal. The release features an epic doom cover of Misfits’ Horror Punk classic ‘Skulls’ and ‘A Conversation with Death (Acoustic)’. Both track were recorded by the band remotely during the quarantine from the coronavirus (COVID-1) pandemic. The Misfits cover is especially a revelation and much like the recent EP from their brethren Spirit Adrift, we kind of want an all unplugged release from Khemmis right now. The band is working on the follow up to the acclaimed album Desolation from 2018. Continue reading

Former Misfits Drummer Joey Image Has Died, Age 63

Sad news a Misfits drummer Joey Image has passed away. He was 63. No cause of death has as yet been revealed. According to the Brooklyn Vegan website, The New York Hardcore Chronicles shared the news on Facebook, writing, “Joey Image of The Misfits dead at 63. Rest in Peace.” Joey was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2016, and was seeking treatment at The University of Miami, where he was a possible candidate for a liver transplant, he wrote in a GoFundMe. Joey was in Misfits between 1978 and 1980 and drummed on the Horror Business EP, the “Night of the Living Dead” single, and the Beware EP, and his contributions can be heard on the classic Legacy of Brutality and self-titled compilation albums. BOOK REVIEW: Michael Alago and Laura Davis-Chanin – “I Am Michael Alago: Breathing Music. Signing Metallica. Beating Death.”

Everybody has a story.

There are many words of wisdom born from the soul of Michael Alago that he has shared in his memoir. Most know him as the music industry legend that signed Metallica to Electra Records and helped guide them on the path to being the biggest band of all time. The Drew Stone documentary Who The F*ck Is That Guy: The Fabulous Journey of Michael Alago (now on Netflix and Amazon) shined a light on him that he deserved for decades. But there is so much more to his story, to the person than bands he signed, and who whom he rubbed shoulders with. The film was a terrific introduction to his life and times and why he deserves the credit he does. The book slowly peels back the years, all the wonderful and terrible things that life can bring and all the in-betweens. A lot of formative times with his family growing up in Brooklyn, dear friends, loves and losses. A terrific tapestry of experiences, stories, and reminiscences. There are many standout movements, including instances of Michael being surrounded the greats of the music and art world; Jerry Brandt, Bill Graham, Danny Fields, Bob Krasnow, Robert Mapplethorpe and many more. It’s cool enough to have met those people, but what really matters is listening and learning from greatness when it comes across your path. He did just that. Continue reading

Misfits Sue Publisher Over “Fiend Skull” Trademark Infringement

The Misfits (aka Original Misfits) have filed a lawsuit against publisher Abrams “alleging misappropriation of the group’s iconic Punk logo for a coffee table book, according to the website www.worldipreview.com. The complaint was filed by Misfits AD, a company established by founding members of the band Glenn Danzig and Jerry Only to manage activities related to their reformed version of the band, on March 9th 2020. Abrams is accused of reproducing the band’s “Fiend Skull” design, registered with the US Copyright Office, without authorization. In July 2019, Abrams, which specializes in publishing illustrated books, released “Scream With Me: The Enduring Legacy of The Misfits”. The book is a coffee-table book advertised on the publisher’s website as the “ultimate visual history paying tribute to one of punk’s most iconic bands”. According to the suit, the “Fiend Skull” design is displayed prominently on the front cover and repeatedly throughout the book. The band has accused Abrams of both copyright and trademark infringement, as well as false designation of origin. The Misfits logo itself comes from the Crimson Ghost cult serial and has been copied, parodied and produced on millions of shirts and other merch for decades. Continue reading
