graveyard innocence and decadence album cover

Hot off the heels of their acclaimed US tour with and Clutch and Mastodon, Graveyard has revealed their track listing for their upcoming album Innocence & Decadence, due out on September 25th via Nuclear Blast. Recorded in Stockholm, Sweden at Atlantis Studios with Janne Hansson (Abba, The Hives, Opeth) and Johan Lindström (Tonbruket) the album promises to build on the bands previous stoner rock and psychedelic style.

Graveyard released a statement about their new album:

“Got a new album coming your way in September called Innocence & Decadence. It’s gonna be an album filled to the rim with a little bit of this – and for all of those who might wonder or worry – there will be quite a lot of that on it as well. We’ve had a great time recording the album at the “gemytliga” Atlantis Studios in Stockholm together with Janne Hansson and Johan Lindström. And after kinda being away from our daily routine as a touring band and the thrill of a new album on its way ….. we wanna leave you with…
Good to be gone, great to be back and let there be September!“ Axel, Joakim, Jonathan & Truls aka Graveyard

Valkyrie – Shadows

11071946_10152831338802545_9100608971574884802_n

Although they’ve not released a record for seven years, Harrisonburg, Virginia’s Valkyrie haven’t been idle. Guitarist Pete Adams joined Baroness, while fellow Adams brother Jake began a career in teaching. And despite promises to the contrary when Ghost Cult talked to them a couple of years ago, the band have signed to Relapse Records to release their third album, Shadows.

With Sanford Parker (Pelican, Leviathan, YOB) on production duties and backed up by Alan Fary on Bass and Warren Hawkins on drums [the Adams share vocal duties], Shadows is a musical step up. With the exception of rollicking opener ‘Mountain Stomp’ the band have matured their sound and mostly ditched their simple but satisfying approach to song writing. Gone are the Iron Maiden-esque gallops, and in in their place is a complex melody of 80s doom [think St. Vitus/Trouble], classic NWOBHM sensibilities and progressive structures.

There’s still plenty of Thin Lizzy-styled twin leads – fans of Baroness will be find plenty of familiar fret wizardry to enjoy – and plenty of thunderous riffs filling every moment, but the songs are more complex and ambitious. The likes of ‘Temple’ and ‘Wintery Plains’ combine the slow and controlled build up with some stellar intricate musicianship and plenty of melody, and not the kinds of songs you could imagine the band being capable of on their self-titled debut (Twin Earth Records) or the excellent Man of Two Visions (Noble Origin).

It’s the musical muscle that makes Shadows so enjoyable, and the Adams’ guitar work takes centre stage throughout of the entire record. Only one track is less than six minutes long, but they all they devote more time to the altar of the solo than anything else. ‘Shadow of Reality’, ‘Golden Age’ and ‘Echoes (Of The Ways We Lived)’ all combine the meatiness of The Sword circa Age of Winters (Kemado/Toy’s Factory) with the 70s fuzz of classic Witchcraft or Graveyard.

Shadows is seven tracks of guitar acrobatics with real depth. Long-time fans might take a few listens to really acclimatise as the songs aren’t quite as instantaneous as previous albums. But they’ve pushed themselves and created something that is undoubtedly influenced by classic metal but not afraid to show off quite how good they are at that guitar thing. All killer, no filler.

Mastodon – Clutch – Graveyard: Live at The House of Blues, Boston, MA

mastodon clutch tour

It’s Sunday and you have work in the morning, you’re moving to a different state, and you’re going on vacation in a few days. What do you do? Squeeze in one more show while you still can, obviously. You can always sleep on the plane.

First to take the stage were Graveyard with that classic 60’s/70’s classic rock touch that I adore. A friend had said that I would like them and he was absolutely right. They opened with ‘Hisingen Blues’ and I knew that I was going to get sucked right into their world. The music sounded very American but the band is actually based out of Sweden. The spirit of rock and roll lives on through men like this and they are worth checking out if you have the chance to see them.

Next up, Clutch. This band had always been in a weird, grey area for me. I liked the music well enough but there was always something just didn’t click with me and I could never quite put my finger on what it was. The one thing I was told over and over again was that I just needed to see them live and I couldn’t agree more. Studio recordings do not do this band justice and Neil Fallon’s vocals are out of this world. You can’t go wrong with harmonicas and cowbell solos either. I highly recommend seeing Clutch in person, it’s a completely different experience in the best possible way.

Mastodon were headlining this evening and I was reduced to a giddy schoolgirl like always. I had another friend with me who had never seen them before which only added to my own excitement. Almost half of the set consisted of songs off of Once More Round the Sun (Reprise) including my favorite track, ‘Ember City’. The rest of the set contained a decent mixture of Mastodon’s previous work, nothing off of Call of the Mastodon (Relapse Records) or Remission (Relapse Records) though. The one complaint that I have is that we weren’t treated to a rendition of ‘Blood and Thunder’ featuring Fallon like some other dates on the current and past tours have. I would have loved to see it person but I guess I really can’t complain because I still got to see them perform ‘The Czar’ and anything off of Crack the Skye (Reprise Records) makes me happy.

Every band was flawless and I walked away with two bands that I’m going to be looking into further and keeping an eye on. I can think of worse ways to spend a Sunday. I never did make it to the office the next day, but, that’s a different story.

Year Of The Goat – The Key and the Gate

574_YearOfTheGoat_CMYK

It’s been two years since Swedish retro rockers Year of the Goat released their debut album, Angels’ Necropolis and the band is back with a new release, the three track The Key and the Gate EP (Napalm)

Fans of their debut will be pleased to know that their brand of Satan-themed retro pop-rock is still firmly in place, and this EP suggests the next album will be more of the same and up to the same standard.

Featuring a classic NWOBHM twin-guitar lead, the opening title track is very melodic and hook driven. Frontman Thomas Sabbathi’s smooth croons the catchy choruses, while there’s a host of infectious riffs and impressive solos. It’s fun but a bit lightweight. The seven-minute ‘Magic Mountains’ is a slower, blues-inspired classic rock number. Anyone who liked Graveyard’s Light’s Out release will enjoy its haunting power. Filled with classy solos, it’s a great track and easily the highlight of the EP. Closer ‘Non-Euclidean Calculus’ may sound promising, but in reality is little more than a glorified outro; a 70s prog style instrumental of atmospheric keyboards and moogs, it’s a long wind down from an enjoyable but not overly exciting EP.

Kadavar – Abra Kadavar (Special Edition)

Kadavar - Abra Kadavar - Special Edition

Berlin’s most bearded gents Kadavar have brought their fuzzed up seventies sounds to the attention of many with their thrift store chic and retro sensibilities being en vogue right now due to the appearance of acts like labelmates Witchcraft and Graveyard. Gaining momentum having been recruited to the Nuclear Blast roster after their debut on Tee Pee Records, these German rockers keep it traditional and no less live sounding than the first time around.

Clearly the synergy between the band members is a very natural one as evidenced by their to-the-bone approach, favouring fuzz and a Led Zep swagger mixed with the gutter blues. That and a slight Krautrock influence is what sets them apart from the legion of retro acts right now. Neither as metal orientated as the former nor blues as the latter, Kadavar occupy a comfortable middle ground, but that is not to say that Abra Kadavar (Nuclear Blast) does not possess its own potency and indeed magic.

Beginning with the raunchy one two of ‘Come Back Life’ and ‘Doomsday Machine’ the magic carpet ride begins with some groovy riffs and plenty of soul. Bubbling bass and fluid guitars inject a passion into the likes of ‘Fire’. Sure the band has a formula from which they seldom deviate yet the crisp sound of Abra Kadavar puts it a cut above the stuffy musty old Blue Cheer obsessives who feel that aping the work of the seventies masters is sufficient reason for their existence.

There may be little deviation in texture or tone but the synth-embellished title track hints on where the next album could go. The up tempo rocker of ‘Dust’ is the height of their achievements thus far. Hanging on a soaring chorus backed with a humdinger of a riff, Christoph Lindemann also gives a great performance at the mic. Kadavar may not differ radically from their peers but that is neither here nor there. The impact of three musicians gelling to create that intangible magic which only happens when artists seek to create something invigorating and close to their hearts rather than searching blindly for that elusive spark of originality.
