Opening today are Tilburg locals Autarkh, whom I first discovered playing the 2021 Roadburn Redux show. Eclectic and heavy, the band mix electronics with metal elements, so much that Encyclopedia Metalum (a.k.a Metal Archives) doesn’t even consider them metal enough. Tonight, though, the band have a live drummer with them, who plays the angular beats with relish. Frontman and guitarist Michel Nienhuis (formerly Dodecahedron) is clearly very much in the groove. A groove expertly set by their temping bassist, who learned the complex material in only a week. It’s very hard to stick a genre on what Autarkh make, but I’d call them Avant-Garde Math Metal.Continue reading

ALBUM REVIEW: Autarkh – Emergent
As the mastermind behind the sadly missed Dodecahedron, future works of Michel Nienhuis were always going to challenge conventions. This was certainly the case with Autarkh’s debut Form In Motion which was as abrasive as it was innovative in its execution. So, in perhaps expected fashion, a new album feels markedly different to its predecessor with sophomore release Emergent (Season Of Mist), if not proving any less progressive and captivating.
Vocalist Michael Eikenaar of Nihill and Dodecahedron Dies, Age 42
Gutting news again today as the vocalist and visual artist Michael Eikenaar, known for his work with bands such as Nihill and Dodecahedron, has died after losing a battle with cancer. He was only 42 and left behind a wife and two children. The news was broken by his bandmate and friend Vincent Korman, who posted a statement to Facebook. Eikenaar was termed “a commanding frontman and fantastic lyricist.”. This is truly sad news and loss for the underground metal community. We send our sympathies to his family, friends, and fans at the time. Continue reading
The Great Old Ones – Audn – Dodecahedron Live At Baroeg
Before true winter besets us and the deep darks of midwinters eve are upon us, in early December I visited a darkness even stranger and deeper than the longest night of the year. DSKNT- PhSPHR Entropy
Right from the offset, Black Metal has always been a genre that has championed the more esoteric aspects of art. Whether that being in the challenging music itself, or in its purveyor’s presentation, it is also a style of music has always thrived in mystique and continues to do so to this day. Shrouded in mystery with an almost hidden identity, Swiss solo musician Asknt has been (partly or wholly) responsible for a number of varied projects over the years, most recently with the full-length debut of DSKNT, PhSPHR Entropy (Sentient Ruin Laboratories).Continue reading
