ALBUM REVIEW: Spectral Souls – Towards Extinction

Formed in 2019, it didn’t take Peruvian death metallers Spectral Souls long to feel the effects of Coronavirus, the global pandemic throwing their plans into chaos within months. After eventually completing work on their full-length debut, the Lima-based act released Towards Extinction (Hammerheart Records) digitally last year but are now reissuing the album in a variety of more traditional physical formats.

ALBUM REVIEW: Ready For Death – Ready For Death

Despite their name, Chicago’s newly formed Ready for Death offer more of a hardcore and thrash style in their debut offering. With 10 tracks and a run time of a little over 20 minutes, their self-titled debut on Translation Loss offers plenty of furious tales about chaos and destruction in a compact package.

ALBUM REVIEW: Detherous – Unrelenting Malevolence

Detherous is quickly becoming a band to pay attention to. Their 2019 debut, Hacked to Death was a balls-to-the-wall thrasher with a killer Kreator-meets-Death sound that easily put the band on many playlists. The Canadian band’s follow-up solidifies the group’s thrash meets death metal style with more unrelenting riffs, bombastic drums, and savage vocals that invoke the great Chuck Schuldiner.

CONCERT REVIEW: At The Gates – Municipal Waste – Enforced Live at Irving Plaza

Recently renovated classic venue Irving Plaza in New York City is the scene for the finale of the US leg of At The Gates most popular album, Slaughter of the Soul. Enforced opened the night. They’re an interesting group to me. They sound like a mix of Death Metal/Thrash with a some hardcore-tinged vocals. Whatever they’re going for, it’s working for them. I dig it.

ALBUM REVIEW: Wake – Thought Form Descent

Since their earlier days as a formidable and unmistakable grindcore act, the evolution of Calgary, Alberta’s Wake has been an absolutely joyous spectacle to witness. Expanding their sound with wider influences and tones on later releases, the culmination up until this point was 2020’s spectacular Devouring Ruin which, whilst utterly furious and feral also conjured further expansiveness and intrigue to their sound. It was a truly exciting work that deservedly generated high expectations for what was next (as well as signing to Metal Blade Records). Expectations that have, staggeringly, been surpassed.Continue reading

CONCERT REVIEW: GWAR – Goatwhore – Nekrogoblikon – The Native Howl Live at Starland Ballroom

I’ve never seen GWAR before, I’ve heard about their shows over the years. Now I finally get to experience it myself! Just as I was starting to shoot the second song of GWAR’s set, I took a shot of some fake blood to my right eye. I laughed as I noticed the camera condom took the brunt of it and my contact lens the rest. Continue reading
