Me And That Man – Songs Of Love And Death
When the lead singer of one of the biggest extreme metal bands ever announces that he’s going to write a “blues, country and folk” album, the response from fans is going to be….well extreme. Some fans will automatically write it off as a joke, but others will take the time to enjoy all aspects of the man’s musical world, and open their mind to the endless possibilities. When I first heard about Adam “Nergal” Darski‘s Me And That Man project, I was beyond excited. This is a man who truly pours his heart and soul into everything he does, and once I heard he teamed up with the legendary artist, John Porter, for this record, I knew this was going to be something special, and that’s exactly what it is. Audio: Giraffe Tongue Orchestra – Crucifixion
‘Crucifixion’, a track from rock supergroup Giraffe Tongue Orchestra, the new band w Alice In Chains vocalist William DuVall aligned with members of Mastodon and The Dillinger Escape Plan, premiered on BBC Radio 1‘s “Rock Show With Daniel P. Carter”. You can hear the track at this link or below:
‘Crucifixion’ is from Giraffe Tongue Orchestra’s début album Broken Lines, with a release date for September 23 via the Party Smasher Inc./Cooking Vinyl labels.
Brent Hinds commented on the formation of the band:
“During the time Mastodon was there for Soundwave, I was at the zoo in Sydney, Australia and was checking out the giraffes. They are amazing animals – one just grabbed a bunch of bananas from my hand with its tongue and peeled them with it as well – by the time the bananas got to its mouth, they were ready to be eaten. I saw Ben who was at Soundwave too and said ‘Man I think I found the name for our band,’ and told him the story.”
“That giraffe made it happen… like us, he figured it out.”, Ben Weinman of Dillinger escape Plan/Party Smasher Inc. added
William Duvall also commented on the band:
“Writing lyrics for these songs was somewhat like writing for film – the mood shifts rapidly and drastically within a song … sometimes the whole scene changes. There were a lot of times where, if you were trying to impose conventional rock songwriting standards on this, you’d be in a whole world of trouble.”
Weinman concluded:
“Brent, William, and myself have all been friends for a long time. Finishing the GTO record with William completes the puzzle. He is a man of diverse talents, and this band gives him the opportunity to spread his wings.”
Giraffe Tongue Orchestra’s lineup has changed since the project was launched in 2012. Actress/singer Juliette Lewis (Juliette And The Licks) was the original vocalist for the group, but has only contributed backing vocals to Broken Lines. Queens of the Stone Age’s Jon Theodoe appears on two tracks as well. The band has also set up a Pledge Music campaign for special merch and album versions and the album is available for pre-order at the following links.

Video: The Cult – Hinterland
The Cult have released a new music video for their new song ‘Hinterland’ from their forthcoming album Hidden City, releasing on February 5th from Cooking Vinyl. You can watch the video at this link or below:
Produced by Bob Rock (Metallica), Hidden City was co-written by mainstays Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy. Astbury commented on the video and the concept of the new album:
“Hinterland’s a place both real and imagined, a hidden city symbolic of a new Rome. Through the eyes of several witnesses, we observe a young woman as she realizes her enlightened self in a dystopian dream world. ‘Hinterland’ is filled with symbolism, reflecting a new aeon in the shift of human consciousness as we realign with our planet’s natural rhythms.”
“Hidden City is a metaphor for our spiritual lives, our intimate interior lives. I find today’s gurus are trying to peddle some cure, product or insight as if it’s a new phenomenon. My place is to respond, not react, to observe, participate and share through words and music. There is no higher authority than the heart.”
Hidden City track listing:
01. Dark Energy
02. No Love Lost
03. Dance The Night
04. In Blood

Frank Black and The Catholics Streaming “How You Went So Far”
Frank Black and The Catholics are streaming “How You Went So Far,” off of his forthcoming The Complete Recordings box set out April 20, 2015 via Cooking Vinyl here.
The 7 CD box features all of the band’s 6 studio albums plus a bonus cd entitled True Blue which is made up of recordings from the Black Letter Days album sessions.
All six formally released albums (self-titled [1998], Pistolero [1999], Dog in the Sand [2001], Black Letter Days [2002], Devil’s Workshop [2002] & Show Me Your Tears [2003]) have been re-mastered from the original live 2-track and 1-track recordings. The release contains well over a hundred songs. True Blue is a disc of “technical demos” that Ben Mumphrey (who engineered all of the mobile recordings) found in his New Orleans recording archive.
The box set will have the songs in alphabetical order as Black Francis AKA Frank Black explains the alphabetisation ‘It feels like an approximation of randomness and its a way to randomise something, especially if its titles.” He goes onto say by placing the songs this way ‘we get away from the preciousness of LPs we put out and its more about the body of work, the good times that we had’.
