ALBUM REVIEW: Hail Spirit Noir – Eden in Reverse
When Greek innovators Hail Spirit Noir spewed forth in recorded anger eight years ago it was with tones of the Aegean gracing a strange brew of Blackened Prog Metal. Fourth long-player Eden in Reverse (Agonia Records) sees the completion of a gradual metamorphosis into total Prog, with the absorption of the band’s live musicians transforming the unit into a sextet.Continue reading
ALBUM REVIEW: Forgotten Tomb – Nihilistic Estrangement
I’m just going to come right out and say it: Italy’s Forgotten Tomb is one of the most criminally underrated bands in the Harsh Doom arena, most probably because its early fanbase still feels aggrieved at its reinvention from a Black metal band. Get over it: it’s been that way for the last seventeen years and eight albums. With a solid unit existing throughout that period, it’s also safe to say that this is more than Herr Morbid‘s project, and new album Nihilistic Estrangement (Agonia Records) continues to display the trio’s ever-strengthening unity with expansions on the core sound.Continue reading
Forgotten Tomb to Release New Album This Spring
Long-standing Italian Blackened/Doom band Forgotten Tomb will release their new album, Nihilistic Estrangement, this May 8th via Agonia Records. This album will be the acclaimed followup to 2017’s We Owe You Nothing! The band has revealed the cover artwork, the tracklisting and pre-orders are live at the links below. The album’s cover artwork is a painting, specifically drawn for this release by artist Paolo Girardi (Power Trip, Bell Witch, Inquisition). It complements the misanthropic and introvert nature of music and lyrics alike. Nihilistic Estrangement was produced by Ferdinando “Herr Morbid” Marchisio (vocal, guitars) and mixed by Alessandro “Algol” Comerio (bass). Jack Control mastered the album at Enormous Door Studios (Darkthrone, Aura Noir, Martyrdod). The band will promote the new album with a headlining European tour in May 2020 with support from Vanhelga (SWE) and Totalselfhatred (FIN).Continue reading

October Tide – In Splendor Below
The Swedish Death/Doom Metal group, October Tide originally started out as a side project by Katatonia’s vocalist, Jonas Renkse and their now former guitarist, Fred Norrman nearly 25 years ago. These Scandinavian fellas had some fire behind them but disbanded after they released their second studio album. A decade past and Norrman decided to bring the heat of their Doom Metal goodness back to life. Now OT is ready to release their Sixth studio album, In Splendor Below (Agonia Records) and this band’s melancholy blaze is burning brighter than ever.Continue reading
Origin – Abiogenesis – A Coming Into Existence
For twenty years the band Origin has set the standard for what excellent, American Death Metal should sound like. They have been blaring an uncommonly heavy, technical sound since the late nineties. Founding member and guitar player, Paul Ryan has been working on this signature style long before Origin was actually formed. Abiogenesis – A Coming Into Existence (Agonia Records) is a release of rarities from Origin’s vault that includes previously unreleased tracks from the pre-Origin era and a remastered version of Origin’s first EP.Continue reading
The Moth Gatherer – Esoteric Oppression
The Earth Is The Sky, the 2015 sophomore album from Swedish miserabilists The Moth Gatherer, gave post-Metal a real kick up the arse: its spacey, synth-drenched starkness oozed intensity, passion, and musicality, and possessed natural – if occasionally long-winded – invention. Latest long-player Esoteric Oppression (both Agonia Records), their first without founder member Alex Stjernfeldt, sees that sparkle given an added cohesion which can only enhance their burgeoning reputation. Continue reading
Decrepit Birth’s “Polarity” Album To See First Time Ever Vinyl Release
Technical Death Metal band Decrepit Birth will see their stellar 2010 release Polarity (Nuclear Blast/Agonia) reissued as a deluxe digipack and special vinyl editions (Orange and Black) for the first time ever. The album releases on April 26th. Pre-orders are live at the ink below. The album is considered the bands’ finest hour, although their other albums such as 2017’s Axis Mundi was also excellent. The album included a cover of Death’s ‘See Through Dreams’ Polarity as recorded at Legion Recording Studio (except for drums at Shark Bite Studios), mixed at Castle Ultimate Studios and mastered at West West Side Studios. Cover artwork by Dan Seagrave (Entombed, Hypocrisy, Vader).Continue reading
Shibalba – Stars Al-Med Hum
For the virginal, when a band’s lineage includes members from Black Metal legends Acherontas and Nåstrond, it’s a fair bet that the new band might follow that bloodline. Not in the case of Shibalba. Stars Al-Med Hum (Agonia Records), the latest issue from this Greek / Swedish hybrid follows their chosen path of ethereal, cosmic Drone and is again partially delivered by instruments of the earth.Continue reading
