FILM REVIEW: Don’t Fall In Love With Yourself – Directed by Jon Nix

I don’t know anything about the director of this documentary or why he made it. I knew about Justin Pearson (Three One G Records, The Locust, Deaf Club, Dead Cross, Retox, Satanic Planet, Planet B) because I saw him play live a few times with Deaf Club, but I had no idea about his history or influence or voluminous work history within the scene. I’ve briefly chatted with him, and he was very polite, humorous but not overly so, somewhat accessible but just out of reach. But his onstage performance is provocative in a way that is inviting:

Do something.

FESTIVAL REVIEW: Oblivion Access – Various Venues – Austin, Texas

After a two year postponement, Oblivion Access Festival finally happened! Although I couldn’t attend all four days of festivities, I drove up to Austin, TX on Saturday to catch the legendary hardcore Youth of Today! It only took over three decades to finally see them lol. The festival was quite an undertaking, involving a lot of local Austin venues on 5th, 6th, and 7th Street. After 3 /12 hours of driving I was ready to stretch my legs, get some blood moving and stay cool in the humid Texas heat. Picking up my passes was a breeze as there were signs posted at Native Hostel directing you to the kind staff who greeted people with friendly smiles and words of encouragement to enjoy themselves.

Deaf Club Share Charity Single and Video for Their Cover of “The Wait” by Killing Joke

San Diego-based Hardcore Punk and Metal collective Deaf Club have dropped a tight new cover and video of Killing Joke’s classic track “The Wait.” The video was created by Displaced/Replaced. The track is available digitally on Bandcamp for people to pay what they want, and all proceeds from now until Jan. 4th will go to support the state of Georgia U.S. Senate runoff election, which may have dire consequences for the USA, following the traitorous reaction to the results of the 2020 Presidential Election. The band consists of underground scene leaders such as Justin Pearson (The Locust, Dead Cross, Planet B), Brian Amalfitano (ACxDC), Scott Osment (Weak Flesh), Jason Klein (Run With The Hunted), and Tommy Meehan (The Manx, Chum Out!). The band released their debut EP and  Contemporary Sickness, as well as a Remix cassette EP of bonus remixes featuring GothBoiClique’s YAWNS, Bubblegum Octopus, 304angstroms, and DJ Embryonic Petit Sac. Watch Dead Cross Cover Black Flag’s Protest anthem “Rise Above” in Solidarity with Black Lives Matter

Dead Cross (Faith No More, ex Slayer, The Locust, Retox members) has been working on a new album for release at some point in 2020, but today they shared a cover as a new single. Black Flag’s searing ‘Rise Above’ has been covered by the band in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. The band shared a video and a mission statement for the track you can see here.

Dead Cross – Rise Above (Black Flag cover) created in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and staunchly opposing police brutality and systemic racism. As such, the track opens with a recording of a Los Angeles resident voicing his displeasure with the LAPD during a public comment period from a regularly scheduled LA police commission meeting.

The video for “Rise Above” was edited by Displaced/Replaced. Filmed by Dave Lombardo, The Lonely Rager, and Becky DiGiglio. Track mixed by Jim Goodwin.
