Fogg – High Testament

High Testament (Tee Pee/Under the Gun Records) is the latest release from Texas fuzz trio, Fogg. They’re a little softer than anticipated but that’s not a bad thing if you’re into that sort of thing. Personally, I like to be moved by what I listen to.

The song ‘Seasons’ is easily my favorite track off the of the album as it’s heavier than the rest, particularly once you hit the 4:05 mark and it turns into something that actually resembles a stoner anthem. That’s when the band just lets the instruments do the talking for them and you start getting the fuzzed out riffs and groovy bass lines that I love.

‘Mountain’ follows suit with a touch of something a little more sinister sounding. The organ really fits in well with this song and adds extra depth and life to the song when the vocals just aren’t enough. That’s not to say that Brandon Hoffman is inadequate in any way, I would just prefer a voice that is less light and fluffy, and a lot more emotion.

If you’re looking for a decidedly chill record, this is a good pick. It’s quiet and soothing, possibly too much, in my opinion. I prefer things to have a little more energy, but when these boys do kick things into high gear, they do it well. It would have been nice to hear more of that rock and roll sound with less of the whole flower child vibe to break up how monotonous the album can be.

FOGG Releasing High Testament on June 23

Fort Worth, TX power trio FOGG will be releasing their new album High Testament on June 23, 2015 via Tee Pee Records and on cassette via Under the Gun Records, who will co-release the LP version of the album in conjunction with Tee Pee. FOGG features drummer Ethan Lyons, guitarist Chase Jowell and bassist / vocalist Randon Hoffman.

The Atomic Bitchwax – Gravitron

Pulling together talent from bands such as Monster Magnet, Godspeed, and Core, psychedelic rockers The Atomic Bitchwax kick off the second quarter of 2015 with their sixth full length release, Gravitron (Tee Pee Records), and it’s one that you don’t want to miss out on.

The album’s opening track ‘Sexecutioner’ is short, but serves its purpose in catching the listener’s attention and preparing them for the riff odyssey to come. However, the hook for me came with Chris Kosnik’s bass lines in ‘No Way Man’. I was in and things only got better from that point. Bob Pantella’s drumming provides the heartbeat and when combined with the way that Finn Ryan makes his guitar sing, it creates something reminiscent of long road trips and Fourth of July barbecues. It feels very American in a way. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, ‘War Claw’ provides an excellent secondary example of this.

Things slow down a bit with the album’s closing track, ‘Ice Age Hey Baby’ but that is by no means a bad thing. It’s an extremely catchy tune and will likely go on to become a sing-a-long/crowd interaction staple during live performances. This is a good place to end the album on and even transitions well back into ‘Sexecutioner’ if you have it on repeat like I still do. I also just love how sad it sounds. I’m a sucker for the raw emotion that gets left behind when you strip away the parties and the sunshine and I can’t stop singing along.

This record is a great way to usher in spring after another long New England winter. It’s a great album but at just over half an hour long, I was left wanting more. Don’t leave a girl wanting more riffs, that’s just cruel. Length aside, The Atomic Bitchwax have released another fantastic record that was well worth the wait. Friends in Europe and keep an eye out for the boys on their tour through May.

Death Alley Releasing Black Magick Boogieland on May 19th

Death Alley’s limited single Peter Pan Speedrock vs. Death Alley was released in 2013. The band came out with Over Under via Van Records and then appeared at the 2014 Roadburn Festival while touring Europe for a month. Black Magick Boogieland is the band’s first full-length album.

Ruby the Hatchet – Valley of the Snake

February 24th marks the release of Ruby the Hatchet’s latest work; Valley of the Snake (Tee Pee Records). Where a lot of bands compete for who is the loudest and the fastest, Ruby the Hatchet catches my attention for the opposite reasons. If you enjoy psychedelic and/or stoner-rock, then the Philadelphia, PA based outfit should be right up your alley.

One of the songs to really catch my attention from the very beginning was ‘Tomorrow Never Comes’ with its heavy organ work. I’m not usually a fan of organs, keyboards, synthesizers or things of that nature because I feel that they tend to overpower the rest of the music but the balance just works in this context. It’s a beautiful track with an underlying feeling of hopelessness. This would be great paired with old horror movie footage. Possible video idea?

I will completely admit that I tend to dislike female singers and will usually write a band off completely if I can’t stomach them, but Jillian Taylor is brilliant. I believe the song ‘Demons’ showcases her talents quite nicely while making it difficult to keep still. Her soft, ethereal voice is like a living creature, calling out to the listener from a place just beyond their line of sight. I’m adding Jillian’s name to my lady crush list, right next to Kylesa’s Laura Pleasants.

Ruby the Hatchet remind me of a mix between The Sword and The Atomic Bitchwax with a woman’s touch. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this album overall and I recommend picking it up for a full bodied stoner/psychedelic rock experience. It’s definitely something that I can see myself having on repeat for a few hours and just getting lost to.

Mirror Queen Releasing Scaffolds of the Sky on April 21st

New York City rockers Mirror Queen will release their new album Scaffolds of the Sky on April 21, 2015 via Tee Pee Records. The follow-up to the band’s 2011 LP, From Earth Below, Scaffolds of the Sky was recorded in front of a wall of Marshall amplifiers at Momek Studios in Brooklyn, and was mastered by Jeff Lipton at Peerless Mastering (Roky Erickson, Big Star).

New Jersey riff rockers The Atomic Bitchwax (aka TAB) will release their sixth full length album Gravitron on April 21, 2015 via Tee Pee Records. The record was recorded at Shorefire Studios (Blondie, Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi) in Long Branch, NJ and mastered by Alan Douches (Motörhead, Tombs).

Since its formation in 1993, The Atomic Bitchwax has inspired hundreds of developing rock and metal bands, but no group of musicians has come close to matching TAB’s unique style of fun, frenetic and formidable R’N’R! Now featuring TWO members of Monster Magnet — bassist/vocalist Chris Kosnik and drummer Bob Pantella — alongside shred-tastic gunslinger Finn Ryan, the band has perfected its unique style of NYC “thunder-boogie” hard rock.

On Gravitron, The Atomic Bitchwax’s Rush-like riff mazes and carpal-tunnel-inducing riffs are on full display; every note bleeds with urgency. Death Alley Releasing Black Magick Boogieland May 19

Dutch heavy punked out proto-metallers Death Alley will be releasing their full length album Black Magick Boogieland on May 19, 2015 via Tee Pee Records. The album is the highly anticipated debut from the underground band featuring former The Devil’s Blood guitarist Oeds Beydals and ex-members of Gewapend Beton and Mühr.

The sound of DEATH ALLEY has been described as “an unorthodox cross contamination of MC5, Captain Beyond, Blue Öyster Cult, Motörhead and Black Sabbath” and “Rock ‘N’ Roll played with metal finesse and a pitch black psychedelic soul”. In 2013, DEATH ALLEY released the limited 12″ split vinyl single, Peter Pan Speedrock vs. Death Alley, which announced the group’s formation with a vengeance. The band’s debut 7″ — Over Under b/w Dead Man’s Bones — dropped last year via Van Records and was hailed as “a serious musical Rock ’N’ Roll statement.” DEATH ALLEY followed the release of the 7″ with an appearance at the 2014 Roadburn Festival and month-long European tour with new label mates, The Shrine.

Philadelphia psychedelic doombringers Ruby The Hatchet is releasing their new album Valley of the Snake on February 24, 2015 via Tee Pee Records. Stream “Demons” here.

Heavy-handed and hypnotic in equal parts, RUBY THE HATCHET creates the perfect shape shift between psych density and metal grandiosity, representing something utterly imposing; primeval and oppressively heavy while maintaining a level of breathless intensity over the course of the full album. Valley of the Snake is a six song journey; a fantastical trek with huge, blistering tracks that journey over peaks and valleys and ditches and oceans before leaving you spinning.
