Pinkish Black – Concept Unification

I basically came out of the womb listening to music. I was lucky enough to be one of those children that grew up being exposed to a multifaceted plethora of music genres. Today, when I started listening to the new album by Pinkish Black, Concept Unification (Relapse Records), I was caught up in a wave a delightful nostalgia. The music flooding my ear holes, created by the Fort Worth Texas duo of Jon Teaque and Daron Beck eerily reminded me of the solo work of one of my favorite bassist of all time, John Entwisle. Entwisle did an album in 1972, titled Whistle Rymes (MCA Records), that I feel the new Pinkish Black album echo’s. What am I trying to say here? I am saying that Concept Unification is fervently grandiose. Continue reading

Sweet Oblivion – Sweet Oblivion

In life there are distinctive sounds that most humans recognize, birds chirping, the sound of rain and Geoff Tate’s signature vibrato rich vocals. Tate is gifting the music world with his phenomenal vocal prowess in the form of Sweet Oblivion’s new album, along with uber talented Italian musicians Simone Mularoni on Guitar and Bass, Emanuele Casali on Keyboards and Paolo Caridi on Drums. The album is deliciously reminiscent of Tate’s early indelible work with Queensryche enhanced by the unique song writing abilities of Mularoni.

HYDE – Anti

One of the best things about reviewing music, in my opinion, is having a music-savvy senior editor that encourages me to review music that is not in my wheelhouse. I have realized that if I was left to my own devices, I would likely stay in my little Heavy Metal utopia, reviewing only what I picked. I received the promo email from my editor about doing a review of Japanese act HYDE. Full disclosure, the only musical act I was familiar with from Japan was Babymetal. So, when I got the promo of HYDE’s new album, Anti, (UMG), I felt a tiny twinge of trepidation. After all, what do I know about Japanese music? Absolutely nada. How was I going to do a fair an accurate review of this music was my query. As soon as the first track off of Anti, started playing, all my fears of doing an inadequate review dissipated. The music that came pouring into my earbuds was the kind of music that bridges all humanity. HYDE’s music possesses a universal sound that almost any person can enjoy or relate to. On a personal note, I broke out in goosebumps from about 5 seconds into listening to the album, an involuntary reaction my body reserves for only the best soul touching music.Continue reading

Combichrist – One Fire

There are very few bands that seem to fly under the radar but yet are insanely popular. Combichrist is one such band. Mention the band name Combichrist to a self-proclaimed music buff, and you may or may not get acknowledgment that the person has heard of the band. Now, play a song by Combichrist to the same person, and that person will respond favorably, most likely saying something like “I fucking love this band!” Honestly, how can you not love a band that is absolutely fearless when it comes to penning lyrics. Frankly, Andy LaPlegua, the band’s founder and songwriting mastermind, is my spirit animal. Throughout his career, LaPlegua has always expressed exactly what he is thinking using his full throttle in your face style of Industrial Metal. Their new album, One Fire, (Out Of Line Music) continues the no holds barred, face melting journey fans have come to expect from this band.Continue reading

Avatar – The King Live In Paris

I have always been a soul that yearned to watch my favorite bands live. There is nothing like hearing the songs that have become the soundtrack to your life performed live. One of the most animated and entertaining bands of present day is Swedish Heavy Metal Band, Avatar. To say the band’s live performance is theatrical would not be giving it justice. Avatar is a band that lands solidly into the “just as good live ” category in my book. You don’t even have to take my word for it, you can hear it for your selves by listening to Avatar’s new live performance album, The King Live in Paris (eOne Heavy).Continue reading

Joyous Wolf – A Place In Time

Once in a blue moon does a band come barreling onto the music scene that makes every person who hears them go, “If Heaven had an in house band, it would be these guys”. Joyous Wolf is a once in a blue moon band, no-foolin’. The band’s debut EP, A Place In Time (Roadrunner Records), is proof positive that Rock and Roll is not just alive and well, it is kicking ass and taking names. Continue reading
