ALBUM REVIEW: Mastodon – Marrow Deep

Few albums have been at the top of the most-anticipated list for 2026, such as Mastodon’s new album, Marrow Deep (Loma Vista Recordings). However, this is not a typical album for the band, as it is the first album after the death of co-founder, guitar god, and vocalist Brent Hinds. Hinds departed the band and then this mortal coil in a terrible accident, and taking place just weeks after the death of Ozzy Osbourne, it was a dark summer for metalheads in 2025. The band is no stranger to tragedy and overcoming adversity, and they have channeled this into relatable, real, and smart metal albums that transcended their concept albums. But the loss of Hinds, coupled with the loss of drummer and co-lead vocalist Brann Dailor’s mother, Michele Lawrence, proved foundational for the bedrock of Marrow Deep, an album centered on the loss, regret, grieving, confusion, and anger surrounding death. The album is also said to be inspired by the Three Fates of Greek Mythology, also known as the personifications of destiny. This is on display, not just in the songs, but the cover art created by longtime Mastodon collaborator Paul Romano (Workhardened).

Joining Brann are fellow bandmates guitarist Bill Kelliher, bassist and co-lead vocalist Troy Sanders, along with new members João Nogueira on keyboards (previously a touring member) and new lead guitarist Nick Johnston; the band was hungry, ready to prove themselves to the world again. The album was produced by Patrik Berger and Kurt Ballou, but also co-produced by the band.

Brent Hinds of Mastodon, Died One Year Ago

It’s hard to believe, but Brent Hinds, formerly a creative force in Mastodon, died one year ago today. He was just 51. He died in a motorcycle crash in Atlanta when a motorist did not yield to Hinds, who was on his Harley-Davidson Motorcycle. Although the split with the band under acrimonius circumstances earlier in 2025, Hind co-founded the band in 2000 and appeared on all eight of their albums, won a Grammy awards, and made a huge impact, especially with his composing and lead guitar playing on albums such as the classic debut Remission, Leviathan (both Relapse Records), Blood Mountain, Crack The Skye and The Hunter (2011) for Reprise Records. In the wake of his death, there have been countless tributes to “Dirty B,” a public memorial at the intersection where he died, murals all over Atlanta celebrating his life and music, and a public walk to memorialize him. Our own Wil Cifer also wrote a tribute to Brent which you can read here. RIP.

Mastodon Share a New Single and Video for “In The Ruins” – New Album Coming Soon

Mastodon shot in Paris for the 2026 album campaign

Mastodon have just shared “In The Ruins,” a song from their highly anticipated new album Marrow Deep (out August 28 via Loma Vista Recordings) inspired by the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene and the personal havoc it wreaked upon bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders and his family. The catastrophic storm severely flooded their home and destroyed personal belongings, leading to a nearly two-year period of displacement that coincided with the whole band navigating the profound grief of the passings of founding member Brent Hinds and drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor’s mother, Michele Lawrence, ultimately channeling the loss into a powerful declaration of resilience and catharsis. The song comes paired with a vibrant video by animation and VFX studio, Hey Beautiful Jerk, that depicts a fever dream journey by a single-eyed creature named Frank across flooded and ruined landscapes that serves as a metaphor for the song’s lyrics.
