ALBUM REVIEW: Marcus King – Young Blood

A rich and rewarding exercise in traditional blues, Young Blood’s (American / Republic / Snakefarm) vital ingredients also include southern rock, soul and even country. As produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys, this is one to wallow and luxuriate in – but don’t get too comfortable as angst and agony are never far away in the songs of a relative kid who seems to have lived something of a life already.Continue reading

ALBUM REVIEW: The Faim – Talk Talk

It seems The Faim sprung out of nowhere back in the middle of the last decade. Playing festivals all over the world, like Reading & Leeds, Lollapalooza, etc with their gleaming bright take on pop-rock anthems. Now, several years on and with their first album already under their belt; the next big step for the band is where to go from there to make their name a household name. Getting in various different producers to cement themselves in the scene, it’s clear they’re taking on this mission in strides. Unfortunately, it’s not a complete success.Continue reading

Broken Witt Rebels – Broken Witt Rebels

Despite their transatlantic fusion of blues, soul and rock n roll, Broken Witt Rebels are a new guitar driven band hailing from Birmingham, England. Songs from their two previous EPs (Howlin and Georgia Pine) plus a smattering of brand new material makes up their debut album Broken Witt Rebels (Snakefarm). It is a soulful yet gritty blend of the new and the old, Kings of Leon-esque arena rock; an Alabama Shakes-like vintage feel with the boozy swagger of The Cadillac Three, who they toured with this month.Continue reading

The Picturebooks – Home Is A Heartache

Gütersloh may be a long way from the Louisiana swamps, but German two-piece The Picturebooks sound like they were born and raised on nothing but the Blues along the Mississippi. The band’s sophomore release and début for Another Century, Home Is A Heartache, is raw Blues Rock stripped to the bare essentials; a fuzzy guitar, stomping drums, and soulful vocals.Continue reading
