Hamferd Shares New Live Video – “Evst”

Doom band Hamferð have released a live video recording of “Evst”, the title track off the band’s 2013 debut LP. Hailing from the Faroe Islands, the band made the clip at the release show for their latest album, Tamsins likam, on March 17th, 2018 at the old Sjonleikarahusið theater in Torshavn. The new album is out now via Metal Blade Records, and you can watch the video below.

Singer Jon Aldara commented:

“This concert was a meticulous production in regards to performance, sound and lighting, and we felt it was the perfect opportunity to record it properly. It’s a great feeling to have a live recording of Hamferð that does not come from an iPhone or from a festival production that we had little to no control over. We took everything in our own hands and went the whole nine yards with a brilliant crew and all the high-end equipment we could get our hands on. Luckily, I really think it shows!”

Hamferð will head out on a tour of Scandinavia this week, notably playing Sweden for the first time in their 10-year long career. See below for all dates!

Dec. 5 – Kobenhavn, Denmark – Beta 2300

Barren Earth – A Complex Of Cages

Formed in Helsinki in 2007 by Amorphis bassist Olli-Pekka Laine and Moonsorrow drummer Marko Tarvonen, Finnish act Barren Earth‘s current line-up is completed by guitarist Janne Perttilä, new keyboard player Antti Myllynen, Faroese vocalist Jón Aldará, and the band’s most notable member, Kreator guitarist Sami Yli-Sirniö.Continue reading

Hamferð – Támsins likam

Hamferð’s slavish devotion to pristine technique and execution on Támsins likam (Metal Blade) becomes abundantly clear merely minutes into it. It’s got the type of laser-focus that may not be feasible for other metal musicians. It’s so well-formed and thought through that it could slightly border on predictable for some listeners. And it’s all well and good to feel that way, but this reviewer enjoys a good Doom Metal album that’s been properly mapped out and won’t run way passed its welcome.Continue reading

Barren Earth – On Lonely Towers

635560827664002242_4050_3

All too often bands are saddled with the ‘Progressive’ tag simply by sharing musical qualities with those few truly evolutionary bedrocks of our musical realm, without actually delivering anything unique or revolutionary whatsoever. Thank fuck for the likes of Barren Earth who are at least trying to offer something new, with their hybrid sound which shows signs of pushing a few boundaries and moving the band into a territory of their own.

Now on a leading label in the form of Century Media, these melancholy merchants have upped their game even further with On Lonely Towers, truly showcasing their diversity in sound. With gloom ridden doom metal at its foundation, this also encompasses 70’s progressive rock’s adventurous side and a contrasting death metal ferocity; perfectly veering from extremity and pace through a moody crawl, with even hints of a more folk-like, colourful atmosphere in part.

Jon Aldara’s vocals are a true highlight and prove the band’s real trump card; at times giving a particularly expressive harsh growl, before pitching to a dark, Scott Walker like croon; all immersed in sincerity and unbridled emotion. Impressively despite this sheer range going on, everything flows and fits superbly, never feeling forced or out of place, but wholesome.

The prog tag is too often afforded to those who merely ape rather than set new ground; but it is bands like Barren Earth that hold the candle to forward thinking and keep it burning. Whilst not being an entirely radical departure from the status quo for some it adopts the mantra against the tried and tested, and, even more startling, even hints at further ambition to come. A band that have never really grabbed the headlines but have always been a formidable presence; and with On Lonely Towers they have shown themselves as surely one of prog metal’s brightest lights.

Barren Earth Releasing On Lonely Towers March 30th

barren earth

Finnish progressive death metal outfit BARREN EARTH, now reinforced by Faroese native lead singer Jón Aldará, have just launched the title track of their highly awaited upcoming third full-length. The album will be entitled On Lonely Towers and will be released via Century Media Records on March 30th, 2015 in Europe and March 24th, 2015 in North America. Stream “On Lonely Towers” here.

On Lonely Towers was mixed by Petri Majuri and mastered by Tony Lindgren at Fascination Street Studios. The artwork was created by Travis Smith.

Bassist Olli-Pekka Laine comments:

“During the writing process of the album, we did many things from a totally new perspective. If there ever was a certain pattern in a basic Barren Earth song, this time we consciously tried to think things differently. Many other things changed too, some of them unintentionally, some of them willfully. A new production team, a new front man, a new record label… The list goes on.

With the first song representing the album, we make no exception. Instead of putting out a song in a typical verse-chorus form, we thought that this 3-piece boulder would stand for the album better. It demands some concentration from the listener, but patience is rewarded in the end! So there you are, the title track of the upcoming album, On Lonely Towers.”

Vocalist Jón Aldará adds:

“On Lonely Towers can be considered a centrepiece of the album concept; stringing together the different storylines from the other songs, uniting the main characters and finally bringing a sense of hope to their struggles. It is also the song which inspired Travis Smith’s beautifully crafted album cover.”
