Wardruna Releasing Yggdrasil on February 24th

wardruna digibook

Wardruna is releasing the second release of the Runaljod trilogy called Yggdrasil on February 24, 2015 via Indie Recordings.

The ongoing Runaljod trilogy, which began with 2009’s Gap Var Ginnunga, is a musical rendition of the twenty-four runes in what is often referred to as the “elder futhark.” Some of the oldest of Nordic instruments such as primitive deer-hide frame drums, kraviklyra, tagelharpe, mouth harp, goat horn and lur are implemented, while poetic metres and lyrics are written in Norwegian, Old Norse and Proto-Norse tongue. Some of the recordings are captured outdoors or under circumstances of significance to each rune while other sources of sound like trees, rocks, water and torches are used. All of these elements are carefully woven into a rich musical landscape and complemented with whispering voices, melodic song and mighty choirs.

With Yggdrasil, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Einar Kvitrafn Selvik has, together with vocalists Kristian Espedal (aka Gaahl) and Lindy-Fay Hella, managed to create a strikingly beautiful and intense continuation of what was started with their first album, but without falling into the trap of merely repeating themselves. Yggdrasil is also graced with guest appearances by renowned Icelandic composer Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson and Iceland’s leading rímur singer Steindór Andersen.

Yggdrasil was written and recorded by Kvitrafn from Spring 2010 to Winter 2012 at his own Fimbulljóð studio and various outdoor locations and will be made available for the first time in CD-digibook format via Indie Recordings on February 24th, 2014. The Yggdrasil digibook is the only version where you can find complete lyrics with English translations as well text on the runes.

Extol Releasing Documentary In April

extol pic

Christian death metallers Extol is releasing their new documentary on DVD titled Extol: Of Light And Shade on April 7, 2015 via Indie Recordings. Watch a trailer here.

The band looks back at their career including Norwegian Grammy nominations, several US tours, top CD sales and national recognition in press and the music scene, while being split in paradox between two worlds – Christianity and death metal.

After six releases, 2007 was the start of a five year break due to their vocalist Peter Espevoll’s tinnitus and anxiety. The documentary gives an insight on tinnitus and anxiety where the singer speaks openly about some of the challenges he experienced in 2007 and the years that followed. Questions about faith and freedom of speech set in a musical perspective are also important topics. The film does also illustrate the band’s position in the Norwegian music scene and their international position. Eyvind Skeie, Hank von Helvete, now deceased Pater Arnfinn Haram and the charismatic American rock pastor Bob Beeman are some of the characters we meet in Extol: Of Light And Shade.

Einherjer Releases Av Oss, For Oss In January

einherjer

Einherjer is releasing their sixth full length Av Oss, For Oss on January 13, 2015 via Indie Recordings. The album was written and produced by the band, and mixed by Matt Hyde (Hatebreed, Slayer, Children of Bodom, Monster Magnet).

Elaborates the band:

“Our Norse heritage is a phenomenon that reaches far beyond what one can hear alone. It is an amalgamation of the mystique and sagas of old, of songs and poems, of woodcutting and sword grinding and the Vikings merciless way of life. It’s a cultural patchwork that fills the consciousness with the brutal majesty of the Nordic nature, the elemental strain, of mighty longships plowing the black seas to reach unknown shores. The wisdom of the gods and their Valhalla. Of cultural encounters and trade. Of violence and brutality. Of tough men in a tough time. Our hometown Haugesund also rings with a historic sound, and from our own shores on the west coast of Norway the influence of the Vikings stretched towards the sea and the world beyond. The adventurers, pioneers, poets and craftsmen have inspired EINHERJER to go their own way. The Vikings courage and boldness have inspired us to never compromise our vision: A vision that is a unique, self-made, original and modern interpretation of our mighty Nordic heritage. EINHERJER have never used their banner to spread cowardly and ignorant propaganda. We never seek entry in the un-culture extremists taint our ancestors with. We wish to give people in all countries knowledge to what we feel is a mysterious and fascinating culture that can be shared and enjoyed by many. Our history rings with the same sound and side by side with other cultures worldwide. From the age of the Egyptian pharaohs, the splendor of the Roman Empire, the genius of the Inka, the bastions of Constantinople, the wonders of the east, the honor of the Samurai and the Greek philosophers. Our heritage is a world heritage. And we strive to renew ourselves. We strive to retell our story in a new way. With a new sound. But with the same spirit that has followed EINHERJER since the beginning. In the wake of Norrøn, we once again tread a new path. Studio Borealis is still our chosen studio. Matt Hyde is still behind the mix. The new album Av Oss, For Oss will help us bring our vision and our heritage even further!”
