Witchkiss – The Austere Curtains Of Our Eyes
There’s always a grimacing thrill from within when a new doom record is released. And the kind of lasting doom that stains your skin with grief and agony is hard to come by. The debut release of New York dwellers Witchkiss, The Austere Curtains of our Eyes (Argonauta Records), has sparked a lot of heavy anticipation and curiosity in the community and rightfully so. This body of work has been a long time in the making with partners Scott Prater and Amber Burns spearheading vocals, guitar, and drums along with Anthony DiBlasi on bass. And the result is definitely worth your attention.Continue reading
Lesser Glow – Ruined
Simplicity is often forgotten and underappreciated in the metal scene. From saturated guitar technicalities to heavy-handed production, it very well seems like today’s metal is caught up in the need to maximize riffs and complexity. But there lies the beauty in Doom & post-Metal and its emphasis on atmosphere and emotion, breaking the mainstream metal formula. The experimental duo, Lee Buford and Chip King, have been testing the definition of ‘heavy’ since the early 2000s but this body of work has finally shattered the preconception.Continue reading
Kolossor – Crown of Horns
The sludge genre is within itself a reputable place for any band to reside especially of the stoner variety. With the likes of High on Fire and Old Man Gloom (R.I.P. Caleb Scofield) pummeling the scene, it’s no surprise that standards are set abnormally high. When one even hears the utterance of sludge, they are guaranteed to come running from the hills just to get a taste of the new blood. And with Kolossor’s début album, Crown of Horns released on Sludgelord Records, new blood has arrived. Hailing from New Jersey, Kolossor has been around for a mere 2 years, having released a self-titled EP in the year prior. But now that they’ve finally dropped their first release, they’ve officially put themselves on the map.Continue reading
