REVIEW: Beyond Creation – Fallujah –  Arkaik – and Equipoise: Live at The Sanctuary, Detroit MI

The bright blue paint job on The Sanctuary makes it the most inviting building on Cardiff Street. Nestled in the middle of Hamtramck, a pint-sized town in Detroit, The Sanctuary is actually one of the most inviting music venues in the whole city. The Canadian Death Metal act, Beyond Creation brought their proggy and technical goodness to Ham Town earlier this week. It was the second to last gig on a month-long tour with Fallujah, Arkaik, and Equipoise. The band has been promoting their most recent full-length album, Algorythm (Season of Mist) on this run and hearing it played in full made for a perfect Metal Monday. Continue reading →

REVIEW: Stone Temple Pilots – Rival Sons – Ty Bryant and The Shakedown: Live at The Ford Amphitheater

Being a New York City guy, and a big kid at heart, I have always loved Coney Island. I never really equated it with shows, even with the concerts coming to the nearby baseball field and the new Ford Amphitheater on the Coney Island Boardwalk, right on the legendary beach. Since Coney is basically the end of NYC, I made the long trek out there with some friends for food and adult beverages first. After heading over to the venue, the big brick façade of the front-facing the beach doesn’t really give away the big open-air/tent vibes of the venue, with the ocean breeze and waves in the distance. As I found my seat, Ty Bryant and the Shakedown were winding down their set. Always a rocking fun time with him. REVIEW: Soulfly – Unearth – Evergrey – Incite: Live at Le Poisson Rouge

Arriving at Le Poisson Rouge early in the for the combined Soulfly / Unearth / Evergrey team up tour date, we were pumped to see such an intimate venue host such a diverse night of music. We hung out early, interviewed a bunch of bands on the bill and generally got psyched for a night of different kinds of metal under one banner.

Deicide – Krisiun – Damim Live at The Underworld, Camden, UK

Anoxide takes to the stage and the room starts to fill. Occasional blastbeats growls, and riffs a-plenty, this local Death metal act make a good impression on the people around me as much as myself, with the headbanging the best indication that, despite the early start, they are certainly worth their spot on the bill. The Dwarves – The Hip Priests Live at The Underworld, Camden UK

The Hip Priests open proceedings for the evening as the sole support and the small crowd around for when they arrive welcomes them quite warmly. While the numbers grow slowly but steadily through their set, this warmth continues throughout, with the newcomers showing a respectable level of appreciation for what is a well-played, in your face Punk set. They are tight and well up for the gig, doing themselves justice with their performance, with the Midlands five-piece giving their all despite the lower turnout by the time of their set, with at least one of their songs surely known by those around me, given their split single with our evening’s headliners, The Dwarves,  they deserve a bigger crowd than they have, but at least do have some new fans to show for it!Continue reading →


Saor – Falls of Rauros – Wayfarer Live at Saint Vitus Bar

Another night another show at Saint Vitus Bar. There’s a certain magic to the venue. The fact that there is an entire cult of people in New York City who realize if they go on any given night they are going to find music that they want to see. Music of a darker sort, the kind of stuff that is hard to discover but once you do there is no escape. Slayer – Lamb of God – Amon Amarth – Cannibal Corpse: Live at BB&T Pavilion

We were gathered at The BB&T Pavilion to pay respects to the life and times of the almighty Slayer. Joining us here in the congregation is Cannibal Corpse who showered us in hymns new such as ‘Red Before Black’ and old, like ‘Hammer Smashed Face’. A funeral pyre of from Amon Amarth which included ‘Twilight of the Thunder God’, ‘As Loke Falls’ as well as Raise Your Horns’. A fitting tribute.
