END OF YEAR STAFF LIST: Wil Cifer’s Top 20 Albums of 2025 and 2026 Predictions

I know you’ve already read at least 10 top lists for the year, and I’ve written at least 20 of them in various corners of the internet for different genres. So what I’ve done to keep things fresh is make this a look at the top 2O artists whose albums set the bar in their respective genres for 2026, and the bands most likely to rise to the occasion and take the top spots for 2026. Being neuro-spicy, I of course had to arrange them ranked by how many times I listened to each album, so thanks to Last FM, the total plays of each album are included as an additional data point, in case you have an official ranking kink. So here’s my top 20 albums for the year and my hopes for the bands to watch in 2026.

20. Deadguy – Near Death Travel Services

Hard-core

Total Plays – 25

They came back sounding even stronger than their first album.

Band Most Likely to bring it in 2026

Some band called Converge has an album coming out.

19. Alice Cooper – The Revenge of Alice Cooper

Rock n Roll

Total Plays – 26

Back with the original Alice Cooper band, he refuses to act his age and picks up where “Muscle of Love” left off.

Band most likely to bring it in 2026

SliverSun Pickups are sounding less shoegazey and more rock these days.

18. Blut Aus Nord – Ethereal Horizons

Black Metal

Total Plays – 27

The French band brought every era of their career to this album to encompass all darkness.

Who Will Bring it in 2026

The safe bet is Mayhem, but Dimmu Borgir has been in the studio for some time, then from the underground MYR might be hungry enough to impress

17. Internal Bleeding

Death Metal

Total Plays -28

Death metal aggression powered the breakdown-style riffs of these groundbreaking riff monsters.

Band most likely to bring it in 2026

Portrayal of Guilt will have outgrown all genres, but still spew forth darkness

16. Scorpion Milk – Slime of the Times

Post-punk

Total plays – 46

Mat McNeary dusted off his Killing Joke shirt for these apocalyptic sessions.

The artist most likely to bring it in 2026

If  World News turns out to be hype, I’ll take a new Grave Pleasures album

15. Callous Daoboys- I Don’t Want to See You In Heaven

Prog

Total Plays -58

They still have some of the metal core energy, but with more time changes, twists, and turns that actually progress rather than just being a bunch of wanking.

Band most likely to bring it in 2026

If I have to pick between Symphony X and Karnivool, I am going with Karnivool, as they are going to come across less like lame Power Metal.

14. Lord Huron – The Cosmic Selector

Folk

Total plays – 59

The haze of pot smoke looms large over this blend of heartfelt country-influenced folk rock

The artist most likely to bring it in 2026

Sturgill Simpson should be due for a new one

13. Author & Punisher – Nocturnal Birding

Industrial

Total plays – 59

Tristan proved that change is good and added a guitarist for the win.

The project most likely to bring it in 2026

Hopefully, Bestial Mouths comes to teach KMFDM a lesson

12. Viagra Boys – viagr*boys

Punk

Total Plays –  60

Yeah, the rock returned to punk rock this year with these guys leading the way. It is actually fun again.

The band most likely to bring it in 2016.

Sure, Bad Religion has a new album coming, but it will more than likely be an underground band from Scandinavia you do not yet know.

11. RWAKE – The Return of Magik

Sludge

Total plays –  60

They returned with the magik of crushing riff and guitar wonderment.

The Band most likely to bring it in 2026

Canadian duo Franklin is going to release their debut early in the year.

10. HAIM

Indie Rock

Total Plays – 62

On the more pop-laced side of indie rock, the sisters not only play their instruments better than most indie rock bands, but they also bring some groovy touches of country and even 70s arena rock in the mix.

Band most likely to bring it in 2026

2026 is going to be the year of the Ratboys

9. Patriarchy – Manual For Dying

Electronic

Total plays -63

Other kinds of electronic music that do not drip with sex like this album were released; I just did not see the point in listening to them.

Other Projects most likely to bring it in 2026

At some point, Lords of Acid are going to release new music.

8. Sanguisugabogg – Hideous Aftermath

Death Metal

Total plays – 72

There is no shortage of brutality here, yet the Bogg Boys wrote some of their hookiest stuff yet, showing it pays to groove when bashing eardrums in.

Band Most likely to bring it in 2026

Frozen Soul is going to crush it, this is a promise.

7. Coroner –  Dissonance Theory

Thrash

Total Plays – 73

Possessed with a sense of adventure that knew no bounds, veteran thrashers forsook nostalgia to make an incredibly vital album.

Band Most Likely to Bring it in 2026

The safe answer is Anthrax, but Power Trip might have more to prove.

6. Heartworms “Glutton For Punishment”

Goth

Total Plays -82

The steampunk whimsy of this album gave a layer of charm not normally associated with the gloom of goth, but the catchy songs earned repeat listens.

Band Most likely to bring it in 2026

Astarie Nite should find themselves on the rise, though Witchboard will have more hype behind them

5. Freeze The Fall – The Red Garden

Hard Rock

Total Plays-84

This young Canadian trio came out swinging with air-tight songwriting that works off big arena-ready anthems without sounding like a beer commercial.

The band  most likely to bring it in 2026

WARGASM UK, the British duo’s electro-tinged brand of explosive rock, has been refining their songwriting, building expectations for their next album.

4. Taylor Swift – The Life of a Showgirl

Pop

Total plays – 95

In the most commercialized segment of the music biz, most artists have a team of songwriters and producers listening to focus groups, while Taylor Swift writes her own rules.

The artist most likely to bring it in 2026.

The smart money would be on Charli XCX, since most of the newer artists are already past their sell-by date. The dark horse in the race would be the duo Snow Strippers, who are poised to break through to larger audiences.

3. Hangman’s Chair – Saddiction

Doom

Total plays -113

This French band continues to cast a thicker haze of sonic gloom, which celebrates the kinda of suicidal fixation as Type O Negative.

Band Most likely to bring it in 2026-

Moonspell is the only band on the horizon, unless we get another album from Witnesses.

2. Spiritbox – Tsunami Sea

Mainstream Metal

Total plays – 154

Courtney and company hit the perfect balance of pop smarts with progressive metal skill and festival rumbling crunch.

Band Most likely to Bring it in 2026

Bad Omens is the only option here, based on the singles they have already begun dropping to get the buzz built.

1. Ethel Cain – Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You

Shoegaze

Total plays – 232

This album took the top spot not only among shoegaze but as a whole due to the emotionally honest songwriting, even though Hayden Anhedonia writes as the character Ethel Cain. This album was not written as a shoegaze album; that is just where the finished product ended up, as it was created in a very organic fashion. This approach is what the bands in the genre could learn from, rather than being hyper-focused on trying to recreate Slowdive’s guitar tone.

Band most likely to bring it in 2026

The Best bet is on Nothing, who in the past has also blended grunge and nineties jangle pop, rather than being a tribute band to the resurrection of a nostalgic sound.
