Formed in 1999 in Dalian, China; Wang Wen are relative unknowns in the West, despite previous works being well received by those in the know and despite previous tours with the likes of Mono and Mogwai. Their brand of post-rock like instrumental music has always had experimental leanings (despite their pretenses that they aren’t an experimental band), as well as in their approach.
Sweet Home, Go (Pelagic records) in some respects fits the typical mold (if there is such a thing) for such post-rock; from its majority lack of vocals to its dreamlike, soothing yet captivating atmosphere. But Wang Wen aren’t afraid of seemingly subtle experimentation and Sweet Home, Go gives plenty of nuance and atmosphere. Use of Cello on ‘Heart Of Ocean’ for example gives an air of a relaxed body of water, capturing the tone of waves gently lapping the shore; before it turns to heavier territory in a storm like fashion. Elsewhere there are elements of Jazz, further string instrumentation and even a closing, chant like A capella song; all of which are seeped in an almost other worldly and floating tone and emotional resonance.
They may be far from household names for many, but Wang Wen have garnered plaudits and proving a work horse of a band in their 15 plus year existence; and Sweet Home, Go is possibly their strongest and most rewarding album to date. Engaging immediately, but layered and well produced enough to reveal just a little more each time and bursting with atmosphere.
