Jimmy Webb – Rock N Roll Fashion Icon Has Died, Age 62

A legend of Rock N Roll has died. Jimmy Webb, who dressed four generations of rockers and fans from his East Village boutique Trash and Vaudeville. He was 62. At press time there has been no official cause of death. Jimmy spent many years as the manager and primary buyer for Trash and Vaudeville before opening his own boutique, I Need More, in 2017 on Orchard St. Over the years Webb had styled for MTV, Rolling Stone, and Vogue, and regular customers/clients were a Who’s Who of punk and rock, including Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper, Debbie Harry, Slash and many more. One of the holdovers from the 1980s punk and metal spirit of the era, he helped define that class of that era, and Jimmy continued to innovate and create looks synonymous with the rock, punk and metal ethos. We met Jimmy several times over the years, notably when we interviewed his friend Doyle on his tour bus in 2018. Continue reading

CLASSIC ALBUMS REVISITED: Quicksand Released “Manic Compression” 25 Years Ago

Post-Hardcore is a sub-genre that gets tossed around today as commonplace, but in the early 1990s, it was a new little brother that the older sibling was not ready to cede attention to. As Hardcore Punk mutated into other offshoots, post-Hardcore started to gain ground. In New York City alone, the epicenter for many new waves of hardcore music, a lot of bands crossed over (see what we did there) and bands started to absorb elements of both with Prong, White Zombie, and Biohazard were all leaning more on metal vibes, Quicksand formed by members of ex-hardcore legend status bands we’re pushing towards a new sound. Heavy, but not in a tough guy way, vulnerable, but smart. By the time the members of essential musical outfits Gorilla Biscuits, Youth of Today, Beyond, Bold, Burn, and Collapse formed an anti-supergroup, released demos and the amazing Slip (Polydor) album, and toured tirelessly, fans in the scene could feel they were building to something huge. They walked in both worlds of Punk and Metal but were also world-building themselves at the same time. Continue reading

The Punk Rock MBA Examines Why “Rock Is Dying”

The Punk Rock MBA has made a living (actually) on their ‘What Killed the Genre” series of videos on their YouTube channel. Now he has posted a new video making a case for the fact that Rock is Dying or already dead if you watch the video. He makes a fair, data-driven case. Of course, he is talking about mass appeal and popularity, the rock and metal underground has never been stronger in our opinion. He mentions Slipknot, Metallica, Tool, Blink-182, Ghost, Five Finger Death Punch, A Day To Remember, Fred Durst, Limp Bizkit, The Used, but also Travis Scott (and Kylie Jenner), Riot Fest, Download Festival, Self-Help Fest, Wacken Open Air, and more. Watch All of Tool’s Music Videos, Uploaded to the Band’s YouTube Channel

The hits just keep in coming for Tool! In addition to their stunning new album Fear Inoculum, The band has shared all of its music videos on their YouTube Channel. In addition to the new Tool album being the first released in the streaming age, this is the first time the band has allowed their videos released beyond past music channels, their concerts and the sadly out of print Salival Video/DVD Boxed Set. Tool originally reached acclaim early in their career with their dark, incredibly crafted videos that matched their early singles. They were also a favorite of MTV‘s animated icons Beavis and Butthead. Adam Jones confirmed some time ago that they created a brand new video for the song ‘Opiate’, but it has yet to see the light of day. Maybe soon? We hope so. Continue reading

In the year of boy band domination, Blink-182 was the answer for the counterculture with Enema of the State (MCA Records). Good Charlotte – Generation RX

It’s hard to fathom that Good Charlotte has been around for over twenty years – it doesn’t seem that long since the Maryland natives were the one band to really thrive in the pop-punk MTV explosion of the early 2000’s with the very successful The Young and The Hopeless (Epic/Daylight). They’re released a number of hits since then, the Madden brothers took time off for a side project, got married to Hollywood darlings, and came back with 2016’s Youth Authority (MDDN) to much praise from old fans, and not so much from others.

Danzig’s Self-Titled Album Turns 30

By the time 1988 rolled around, Glenn Danzig was already a music legend with over a decade-long career under his ghoulish belt. He had already left his imprint on two influential punk bands. Although much more underground at the time than today, The Misfits was one of the preeminent hardcore punk bands to ever come into being. The were innovated, copied and had a huge mythos since they were relatively short-lived. Samhain was even more underground, playing up the splatter and gore theme of the horror punk angle, and had several influential releases. Moving on to a solo project, and partnering with mega-producer Rick Rubin (Beastie Boys, Run D.M.C. LL Cool J) the Def American label honcho seemed like a calculated risk at the time. The results were explosive and arguably produced the best, most endearing music of Glenn’s career with his new band Danzig and his eponymous debut, which was released thirty years ago today.
