Earlier this year Red Fang drummer John Sherman was interviewed by Ghost Cult, and he detailed the bands’ philosophy about touring, and playing in front of an ever-evolving fanbase:

We’re gonna try to win them over even if they’re used to listening to screamo bands or whatever, but see what kind of reaction we could get out of our shit. We had a blast. Sometimes it’s tough and scary playing in front of an audience who you think is going to hate you. It’s also a challenge. We think we can win them over, and often we do. I’d like to think that our band is versatile enough. I have a hard time classifying ourselves so we can play with bands like Mastodon and we could also play with bands like Clutch. It doesn’t have to be super heavy but it can be. It’s whoever we’re playing with.”

The roots of Progstravaganza started as a compilation series from their label in 2010, and in the past have included such notable names as Astra, Scale the Summit, The Wrong Object, Exivious, Blotted Science, Soft Machine, Fughu, Galahad, and many more. The twentieth edition will be called Landmarks and besides new bands it will feature some of the artists that were featured on the previous samplers. Prog Sphere is also starting a mini-documentary series titled The Story of Progstravaganza, where some of the artists that were featured in the past will be talking about progressive music today.

On top of that, every band is showcased with an interview on the Progstravaganza website and is also featured on ProgSphere’s Progify streaming service. Baddass!

Besides the inclusion on the sampler, Progstravaganza CD also brings features in a special printed Progstravaganza magazine, 6-month promotional campaign, interviews, reviews, lyric/photo videos, polls, commentaries… More features will be added.

In the meantime Dying Fetus hits the road in the USA on this year’s Summer Slaughter Tour, as direct support for Morbid Angel, and also counting Goatwhore and Fallujah on that bill. That tour begins tonight in California. When they are done with touring for the year, they will turn their attention to recording their next album, due in 2015, also for Relapse.

Ben Weinman Expands His Vision for Party Smasher Inc.

partysmasherinclogo

Ben Weinman was already one of the busiest guys in heavy music, but now his dance card will be filled to the max. What originally started out as a vanity label for is now going to be a fully-fledged “one-stop portal for musicians, photographers, illustrators, fashion designers and industry mavericks of all stripes.”, according to the Dillinger Escape Plan guitarist and resident stage destroyer.

As reported by Blabbermouth.net, Weinman has been cultivating this idea for sometime, and just needed to put the wheels in motion:

“I was well into my twenties, with a college degree and a corporate job, playing music with no intention of generating money or some massive fanbase,” explains Weinman. “Before I had even realized it, I was making 100% of my living creating art. How did this happen? Because we ignored the ‘rules.’ It wasn’t until I started living my artistic life with that mindset that I became a responsible creator — one who could move people through honest expression. And that is what Party Smasher Inc. is all about. We are here to celebrate the artists that are following their own path, undeterred by the trends.”

This continues an upward trend of artists driven collectives, either creatively or in management roles in the current scene. As bands age, die out, or plain run out of steam with fans; it’s great to see people in the business get creative when it comes to their future and ensuring a career beyond albums and tours. Bands dudes used to (and still do) flock to studio and record label jobs, but those are drying up and going away. Look for more of these ventures to pop up in marketing, management, fashion, and new media soon.
