Rivers Of Nihil – Where Owls Know My Name

A relationship between Heavy Metal and birds has existed for decades. Representing everything from freedom to patriotism, the mighty eagle has flown free, as high as the sun, and even cried, not to mention appearing in varying degrees of quality on the covers of every Primal Fear album ever. Crows, ravens, and vultures all stand proudly and fiercely Metal, and even the mention of blackbirds and albatrosses has been known to get moshpits moving. Continue reading

Choosing Death: the Improbable History of Death Metal and Grindcore Book Out In April

choosing death book

Author Albert Mudrian (also editor in chief of Decibel Magazine) is celebrating the 10th anniversary of Choosing Death: the Improbable History of Death Metal and Grindcore with an expanded and revised edition, flaunting 100 additional pages of new content.

This fully redesigned hardcover version is the inaugural release of brand-new imprint Decibel Books, and will be limited to 3,000 hand-numbered copies. It boasts three new chapters (with new material interspersed among the original 10 chapters), over 50 new interviews (for a total of 200) and a new cover painting by legendary death metal artist Dan Seagrave, recalling elements of his classic Entombed and Morbid Angel album covers.

Now out of print, the original Choosing Death has been translated into seven different languages around the world. This exciting history, featuring an introduction by famed DJ John Peel, tells the two-decade-long history of grindcore and death metal through the eyes and ringing ears of the artists, producers and label owners who propelled them. Phil Anselmo (Down, ex-Pantera) called it “something special. This is a must-read for anyone who wants a comprehensive ‘who-did-what-when’ book. Thumbs up.”

The revised and expanded Choosing Death: The Improbable History of Death Metal and Grindcore is available for pre-order exclusively HERE. Books will ship the week of April 12th.

Southern California hardcore stalwerts Disgrace have booked an East Coast US tour for mid-April, with dates posted below. Stream “Uncreation,” off of True Enemy, out March 24, 2015 via Closed Casket Activities,
here.

DISGRACE The True Enemy Tour:
Apr 12: Amityville Music Hall – Amityville, NY
Apr 13: Bogies – Albany, NY
Apr 14: Sala Rossa – Montreal, QC
Apr 15: SHIBGB’s – Toronto, ON
Apr 16: Ocean Garden – Buffalo, NY
Apr 17: The Voltage Lounge – Philadelphia, PA (w/ Nails, Incendiary)
Apr 18: The Palladium – Worcester, MA (New England Metal & Hardcore Fest)

Disgrace will strike out at backstabbers, cowards and religious zealots with pure fury through one of the most infectious, groove-heavy, death-influenced hardcore records in recent times with True Enemy. Featuring members of Nails, Creatures, Forced Order, and four-fifths of Twitching Tongues, Disgrace devastates with harshness of masters Merauder, Cold As Life and All Out War, yet taking on metallic attributes of early Bolt Thrower, Celtic Frost, Cannibal Corpse and Sepultura, delivering a modern, punishing metallic groove. Disgrace will now grab the scene by its throat with their debut LP, produced and recorded at The Pit in Van Nuys, California by vocalist Taylor Young (also of Nails, Twitching Tongues), and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege (Integrity, Nails, Blacklisted). True Enemy‘s thirty-four minutes of executioner style metallic hardcore have been shrouded in appropriately grim cover art by legendary artist Dan Seagrave.

Bearing an impressive arsenal of recordings amassed since 2010, including notable splits, EPs, demos and two prior LPs, each chapter of XIBALBA’s recorded bloodline to date has seen the band expand upon their dense, hateful sound, and their third LP, Tierra Y Libertad, proves to follow this ominous warpath. With some of the band’s most savage death metal-fueled hardcore and decimating breakdowns to date, XIBALBA still continues to impress with new atmospheric tones and harrowing elements with nearly forty-four minutes of unrelenting revolutionary violence. Tierra Y Libertad was recorded by Taylor Young (Nails, Twitching Tongues, Disgrace) at The Pit in Van Nuys, and has once again commissioned Dan Seagrave (Dismember, Entombed, Suffocation) for Tierra Y Libertad‘s cover artwork.
