ALBUM REVIEW: Black Stone Cherry – Black To Blues Vol. 2
After the success of the first one, and acting as a nice stop gap between albums, comes Back to Blues Vol. 2 (Mascot Records) – Black Stone Cherry’s second EP covering blues standards from years gone by. Like the first one it comes a year after a proper album, 2018s Family Tree (Mascot Records) in this case, and is chock full of big names. Happily, also like the first volume, it is a joy from start to finish – with the six blues classics given the full Black Stone Cherry treatment.
REVIEW: William DuVall: Live at Cutting Room
If you have read these web pages of Ghost Cult, you know one of our favorite albums of 2019 is the solo début album from William DuVall of Alice In Chains. While many know him for fronting that legendary band since their comeback in 2006. However, as discussed in our review of One Alone, Duvall’s lengthy career has traversed genres and time-space in a way that all great singer/songwriters can. The album is introspective, yet fiery and lends itself to this solo setting. With the artist doing a brief tour to promote the release, we were excited to see a new side of the man in person at Cutting Room in midtown east neighborhood of Manhattan. Continue reading

Lizzy Hale of Halestorm jumped on stage last weekend with Nashville rockers Slider to cover Soundgarden’s ‘My Wave’ live at the Basement club in their hometown of Nashville. The track comes from 1994’s Superunknown (A&M Records) album. Lizzy and other members of Halestorm are supportive of underground bands in the region and often jump on stage for covers and originals. Chrome Waves To Release Unreleased Material This Fall, New Album in 2020
Post-metal group Chrome Waves will release The Cold Light Of Despair, a collection of both new and previously released singles, covers, and more. The record drops November through guitarist Jeff Wilson’s independent label Disorder Recordings. Following nearly five years of silence, Chrome Waves was revamped and relaunched in 2018 with a new lineup containing former members of Wolvhammer, Nachtmystium, Abigail Williams, Amiensus, and more. The band issued their excellent and highly anticipated debut LP, A Grief Observed, on their own in early 2019, after which it was picked up by Avantgarde Music for vinyl and European release. The band has toured several times throughout the year with the likes of Tombs, Without Waves, Amiensus, and others, and several covers, singles, and more have seen digital release along the way. Gothic-tinged electronic band Death Valley High are releasing a new EP this week, Duel releases from MinusHEAD Records this Friday, August 23rd, 2019. The EP is have composed of inventive 1980s covers by inspired bands (think Faith No More, Eurythmics, Metallica, Bananarama) made in collaboration with music legends and underground tastemakers, while the other half is made of remixes of current DVH material.
