Fine Creatures- Electric La La Land

Describing one’s self as “The Dirty Beatles”, however tongue in cheek is pretty self-evidently a bold statement of intent. When it’s a claim made by a group in such an early stage about to release their debut EP release its definitely going to raise some eyebrows. At first glance/listen Electric La La Land (Symptom) may feel like a fairly generic but fun, sunshine ready release; but upon closer inspection Fine Creatures have provided an unexpected level of depth.

Encompassing a subtle range of styles, Electric La La Land shows a surprising maturity for such a youthful band, from alternative rock to Britpop and further influences are woven in. Album opener ‘Money’ is an upbeat, midtempo affair which wouldn’t sound too out of place on commercial radio stations, complete with vocalist James Hall’s Liam Gallagher meets Jim Adkins delivery.

‘Settle Down’ shows a much more vivid Britpop worship, in contrast with the more direct ‘Get Up’ which shows more of a punky edge than its counterparts.

With a first time EP release, time will tell on where Fine Creatures go from here, but Electric La La Land is the sound of a band with some considerable potential. It may not be the most original release ever with signs of influence being easy to spot, but how they are brought together pretty fluidly and with some signs of a wider diversity at play, Fine Creatures seem on the cusp on releasing something both with intrigue and that could very well take off. A decent starting point for such a young outfit.
