This was a doozy of a weeknight show in Manhattan and we were gifted with over an hour of Boris and their amplified wall of sound. It’s crazy to think that it has been since 2001 since we haven’t gotten at least one yearly release from Boris in some form and this year’s Hello There collab (with Coaltar of the Deepers), live performance of Fade, and 2 years later, and Noise. All these releases dropping this year continue to prove how prolific of a band they are.
It was a sold-out Wednesday night at Manhattan’s Racket NYC, formerly known as the Highline Ballroom, for those familiar with New York’s storied venues of yesteryear. Starcrawler opened things for this two-band tour package. They played for right around an hour and had a solid stage presence as they kicked out their grooves. Wata of Boris came out about halfway through the set to perform a song with them.
The mighty Boris finally greeted us with their sonic opulence, playing all of Amplifier Worship (2000) in full every night of the tour. Just, wow! They are currently on a level all to their own. What an incredible performance, the drama and presence, I could have easily enjoyed another hour added to their already hour-plus set. I love seeing Atsuo at the front and it was a fun challenge to get interesting pictures of him playing drums from behind. It was packed, hot and sweaty, and I was blanketed in sound, my special place. Until my next outing…
