Death Alley – Supersonic Blues: Live At Ekko, Utrecht, NL

Supersonic Blues: Live At Ekko

Hailing from Amsterdam, Death Alley are making quite a name for themselves, and as such with the release of their special set at Roadburn last year as a live album, Ghost Cult decided to go see their release show in Utrecht. These shows they performed as Death Alley as a six piece, with the addition of Ron van Herpen and Jevin de Groot both on guitar. Known for their psychedelic infused hard rock that reminds of smoky back-room bars and topless dancing-girls, their live shows are known to be energetic and primal.Continue reading

Twelve Foot Ninja – Uneven Structure: Live At Mama Roux’s, Birmingham UK

Well my first, and in all honesty probably last, visit to Mama Roux’s in Birmingham was certainly eventful. Once inside the first thing you notice is that a lot of thought has gone into Mama Roux’s and the décor is sublime, the next thing you notice is that it’s unbelievably tiny. Honestly, it makes the Alma inn in Bolton look roomy, and 45 minutes before the first band were to play and the sold-out gig was already ominously crowded.

To say France’s Uneven Structure seemed cramped on the tiny stage would be an understatement, the makeshift stage extension of flight cases with monitors perched on top made it possible for them to stand up, but it did seem to hamper their performance somewhat once their energetic set began.Continue reading

Havok – Warbringer – Gorod – Exmortus – Rebellion Bar, Manchester UK

You know it’s going to be a good gig when the first band have already made your jaw drop before you made it into the venue, and they only started playing as you turned around the corner. When it’s a struggle to strap on the camera because of the overwhelming compulsion to play air guitar, you know it’s going to a be a damn fine night indeed.Continue reading

Big Business – Whores.: Live at Camden Underworld, London

Midweek gigs can often be underfilled and lacking any spark from the audience. No such trouble at the Camden Underworld for Big Business and Whores., where a night of punk-infused metal overcame any midweek lethargy to get the blood pumping and ear bleeding.Continue reading

Mayhem – Dragged Into Sunlight – Inconsessus Lux Lucis: Live At Academy 2

First band for the evening were the Mancunian mouthful that is Inconsessus lux lucis, try saying that fast after you’ve had a pint. With a name like that and a bill like this you’d be forgiven for expecting so straight up black metal. That being said the fact they’re on I, Voidhanger also makes you expect the unexpected. Continue reading

PIG, Mortiis, Seraph Sin: Live At The Ruby Lounge, Manchester

First up were Glasgow based Seraph Sin who it must be said were bloody good. A slightly hesitant start but they very quickly broke into their stride. The crowd this evening were kind of small but they didn’t half bounce. Seraphs Sin’s sound is weighted a little bit more towards the metal side than industrial and the mix works well, with a gritty guitar sound and some meaty thrash riffs in the mix they were greeted with a good crowd response. Continue reading

Blaze Bayley – Babylon Fire – Faith in Glory: Sound Control, Manchester

Faith in Glory are a hard rock band from Bolton. They played a decent set and were musically very tight, no doubt helped by the core of the band being brothers Jack and Aiden Collins on Guitar and Bass respectively. By the standards of many an opener they were damn fine, playing with energy and solid groove they were certainly welcomed by the decent crowd.Continue reading

Clutch, Valient Thorr, Lionize: Academy, Manchester

Clutch, by Rich Price Photography

I’ve not heard much about hard rockers Lionize before tonight, I know they’re signed to Clutch’s Label Weathermaker Music on which they’ve released ‘The Voyage EP’ this year. They’ve been on tour with Clutch a couple of times and include Clutch’s Tim Sult as an occasional guitarist in their line-up. After that basic research I figured it was safe to assume from that they would have a similar sound to Clutch and decided to leave some air of mystery for the actual gig. Continue reading

Wardruna recently went on tour to promote their latest album, Ragnarok (By Norse), the last in the Runaljod trilogy. After selling out the seated hall for Tuesday night, an extra show was planned for Saturday night in one of the standing venues of the building. Having sold out this evening as well, the band was greeted warmly by over a thousand enthusiasts. Continue reading
