Al Barile of SSD, Gage, and X-Claim Records Has Suffered a Heart Attack
Boston Hardcore Punk legend Al Barile of SSD (SS Decontrol) has suffered a heart attack while in the hospital dealing with other health issues. The news was shared by Al’s social media pages, SSD, and his wife Nancy. Al had been admitted to the hospital a few days ago, and he has been having chemotherapy off and on for his colorectal cancer, first diagnosed in 2023. Along with Al, SSD is one of the most important bands in punk and straight-edge history, and it’s hard to imagine the genre’s fabric without his riffs. Al and the band were just inducted into the New England Music Hall of Fame, class of 2025. SSD’s classic early releases The Kids Will Have Their Say (LP, X-Claim Records, 1982) and Get It Away (EP, X-Claim Records, 1983) have seen re-issues in the last few years and you can support Al’s plight by purchasing from his online shop of merch or his many guitars he is selling to offset the cost of his medical care. Get well soon Al!Continue reading
ALBUM REVIEW: Manntra – Titans – Napalm Records

Billed as “Croatian Folk Metal,” the “folk” element is a much smaller element than, say Tengger Cavalry. This thing is an NWOBHM/ Power/Symphonic Metal tour de force (emphasis firmly on “force”.) Even the cover is huge: Lord of the Rings meets Templar Knights in a pitched battle.Continue reading
