Fourteen-year Deathcore/Melodic Death Metal vets, Through The Eyes Of The Dead, are back with their latest in Disomus (eOne). Ten tracks is all that is needed to get the point across that, while some early Deathcore bands have moved on to other evolutions of sound, TTEOTD has stuck to their roots. While this album will not be considered a classic for the genre, it is a well written, recorded, and produced a collection of tracks, that flow together.
‘Haruspex’ was the first track on the album that stood out for me because, funny enough, has the first memorable breakdown, which just comes with the territory. The guitar riffs are also crafty and thoughtful, not just overkilling the “chug chug” type riffs; not to mention the solo is absolutely gorgeous and one of the highlights on Disomus. ‘The Binding Nightmare Hex’ is another memorable song off the record which starts with a drum intro and the guitar work comes over the top with quick yet aggressive harmonics. Once again, the guitar solo in this track is majestic which builds your spirits up only for TTEOD to utterly destroy you with the forthcoming breakdown in the end. As for the most aggressive track on the album, I would have to say ‘Teras’ takes this one. While the riffs are still technical, they remain on that classic death metal plane. Some chugging is brought in which is used sparingly up to this point in the album. Lastly, yes we have another fun solo, but the breakdown sections tossed in really dial up on the aggression where other tracks were looking to be more on the melodic side.
While I cannot say Disomus is one of the standout albums for the genre of Deathcore, Through The Eyes Of The Dead still delivered a good recording of ten fun and cohesive tracks. Perhaps TTEOTD are not to blame here considering that Deathcore well has been drained pretty dry over the past ten years, and most everything has been done already. At any rate, fans of the band and the genre, in general, should be happy with this release.
