ALBUM REVIEW: Stryper – When We Were Kings

Stryper is one of those bands that has won world recognition for their consistent and dauntless directive. Their resolution to overtly share their beliefs through their big and boisterous sound has made them one of the most acclaimed faith-based Metal acts out there. Their ability to share a powerful and positive message while still being aggressive has been an impressive feat throughout their career.

Even after forty years of showcasing their remarkable resilience and cunning craftsmanship, this veteran act proves they still have more to offer. The Californian quartet is getting ready to release their twelfth studio album, When We Were Kings (Frontiers Music s.r.l.), and they prove why they are still significant in the scene.

Strident strings are struck on the opening number, “End Of Days” and an instant classic vibe is felt. A lot of the numbers including “Love Symphony,” “Rhyme Of Time,” and “Divided By Design” all bite with colossally crunchy and rotund riffs. The thick, edgy guitar work stands up front and dominates a lot of each piece.

There is a moxy in the bottom end and a real groove on songs “Unforgivable” and “When We Were Kings.” This band hits hard with hearty heat coming from each player. Michael Sweet’s powerhouse vocals do not disappoint as he delivers lyrics full of hope with an alluring vibrato and determined crooning. He can still hit the high notes and when he showcases his falsetto it amps up the songs to a new level of energy.

Each piece is thoughtfully spirited with attractive harmonies, catchy bass work, and large, theatrical choruses. There is some old-school sound on their feel-good numbers like “Trinity” and their more rock ballad-esque song “Betrayed By Love.” Many of the number’s flair with galloping guitars, danceable melodies, and upbeat feels. They flirt with some of their old Glam Metal sound while also exploring Pop Rock, and some Blues elements.

There is nothing groundbreaking on this record, but there is something for their old and new fans alike. They are able to clearly prove how they can still capture the magic they had in the eighties while not just being a nostalgic act. This is a lighthearted listen that is refreshingly enjoyable.
