ALBUM REVIEW: Shrykull – Subconscious Realms

Blackened Deathgrind is a trifecta of a subgenre that is tailor-made for the backdrop to an album that deals with limitless outer space and the vast uncertainties throughout.

Beyond Subconscious Realms (Road To Masochist/Eggy Tapes) is Shrykull putting heart and soul into nine tracks rife with intensity and presence. It’s established with a quintessential wall of sound but has so much more to offer. The burgeoning cacophonies created are more of a base than something that is heavily relied on.

The effective variety in vocal deliveries featured on “Phobos Anomaly” springs the track to life and the composition overall has structure despite its psychopathic tendencies. There is something about Grindcore when it features distinctly different vocals as if the erratic intensity is given another layer of unbridled chaos.

“Blockading The Kingdom Of Infinite Space” might have the title of a Blood Incantation b-side, but is sonically dense with strong Grind growls. The muffled production is reminiscent of a rumbling herd of American bison charging towards you with increasing velocity.

Keeping with animal analogies, “Id Hammer” sees drums imposing its will with the might and force of a hippo’s jaw that has a full-grown pumpkin lodged in between its teeth.

There is also obviously dissonance throughout, and the cosmic lyrical themes don’t turn this record into an astral affair. Instead, it strengthens the album and allows it to further challenge the constraints of what music is “supposed” to be.

The artwork might not tip off what Shrykull are about, but it’s entirely worth giving this a try (or two).

Beyond Subconscious Realms brings the vigor of a celestial body easily influencing anything and everything within its gravitational field.
