ALBUM REVIEW: Mugshot – All The Devils Are Here

Over the years, I have come across music that covers the full spectrum of emotion and appreciate most of it. Sometimes I just need a good angry album to take the edge off, and Mugshot has delivered just that. All The Devils Are Here (Pure Noise Records) is a storm of twelve tracks that blow past you in less than half an hour. The mixture of hardcore punk and Swedish death metal ebbs and flows in either direction as the album progresses, keeping my attention.

Right off the bat, “Die in Fear” kicks off with a bass break two-step segment to get the party started. Another bass break comes in later on after some aggressive lyrics and riffs that bleed into the next track, “Afore A Waking Nightmare.” The amount of panic riffs and then dropping into a breakdown is a pretty negligent way to start an album, and I am here for it.

“Baptized in Concrete” is certainly the track to turn into a primal beast in the pit and start swinging indiscriminately. The build-up to the breakdown halfway through is already negligent, but then there’s an outro breakdown that fully satiates the need to be a caveman.

“Me and You” is exactly as personal and loathsome as expected with a song title like that. There are plenty of two-stepping spots to get your cardio in, too, which is always a big plus. The song wraps up with a galloping breakdown to tear your rotator cuff before it picks up to another two-step.

Metalcore has been around for so many years at this point that it’s uncommon, personally, where I listen to a new band in the genre and can make it through the whole album. Mugshot put together a fine album in All The Devils Are Here that touches on all of the different eras of metalcore, as if showing tribute but also progressing forward.
