ALBUM REVIEW: King Parrot – A Young Person’s Guide To

There’s something about Grindcore that is so ridiculous that it ironically makes me like it more. Melbourne’s own King Parrot dropped their long-awaited fourth full-length record, A Young Person’s Guide To (Housecore Records), which brings the riffs, the groove, and all the disgusting, yet funny lyrics. Each track attempts to stand out on its own, but the back half of the album has a couple of duds; however, it does finish strong!

“Fuck You and the Horse You Rode in On” is not only a fantastic song title, but the track goes pretty hard with monster riffs and a good amount of groove before ladeling grindcore bits on top. The outro doubles down on the intensity by making the riff even heavier while removing the grindcore to push the fact that this horse deserves the fuck you.

A couple of tracks later and we are met with “It’s a Rort.” It is one of the longer songs on A Young Person’s Guide To at a whopping three minutes and twenty-two seconds. However, this one has it all: high-intensity drumming, groovy riffs, police sirens to scare you as you’re driving, and a well-placed breakdown to wrap the track up.

The closing track, “Pissing on the Fist of the Law”, is the perfect track out of the rest to be the bookend. The tempo remains the same throughout, with little hiccups of faster speed only for the opening riff to return, but slightly slower and heavier to close the door.

Overall, another solid release from King Parrot in the form of A Young Person’s Guide To. Most of the tracks get my head bobbing or banging, with only a few that kind of lose me. Fans who are accustomed to King Parrot will be happy with this new record, while new listeners could certainly jump on the bandwagon and work backwards through the discography. Just make sure to shower after listening, as you will feel grimey, in a good way.
