Labeled as a Melodic Death Metal band, Cariosus instead is better defined as a melting pot of exquisite musical elements. Though that descriptor may not sound as flashy or attention grabbing, bear with me (it’s worth it). Will, Until Beauty (Self-Released), the duo’s first full-length, meshes deathcore, metalcore, tech-death and even some progressive techniques while boasting eight thunderous – thunderous – tracks.
The appealing variety and pace is only the beginning. As with any captivating piece of extreme music, this record is spearheaded by a pummeling vocal performance that is matched by a vivacious rhythm section which together is a match made in heaven.
“How The Flesh Knows” is a sophisticated showcase of an eclectic, extreme metal-style acumen. Shrieky grunts prepare listeners for an intoxicating tempo which is present from start to finish, and spine-tingling percussions here and there could power a fighter jet.
Though the opening track may be the most revealing of an appetizer. A proggy introduction builds into a thrilling metalcore number, as “All Too Human” is enveloped by a boisterous, frenetic tempo. The vocals are staunchly commanding, and vicious screams are just the cherry on top.
As for the instrumentals, the guitar work is spirited and produces subtle melodies to latch on to. “Heaven’s Portent” bursts onto the scene armed with flickering riffs and breakdown-y goodness. “The Narrow Path” is riveting, and reinforced by technical soloing (and hidden symphonics).
Excitingly, the record ends with harsh wails that border on Travis Ryan territory.
As for the album cover, the artwork is somewhat minimalistic in its subject material with spiraling blues and browns intertwined with soft whites. It effectively teases the potential listener and puts more of an emphasis on the content found within as opposed to a flashy introduction which might influence biases.
Don’t approach Will, Until Beauty as strictly melodeath. Cariosus pepper their latest effort with a grab bag of wonderfully executed extreme elements, like a buffet that caters to all. The aggression and speed is there, as are the carefully crafted riffs, melodies and solos.
