ALBUM REVIEW: Bedsore – Dreaming The Strife For Love

Hello friends, quick question, what do you get when you mix prog rock with metal? Well short answer, you get the Italian based band Bedsore. This statement, although true falls very short though, of defining what this band is presenting on their new cut Dreaming The Strife For Love (20 Buck Spin.)

This album plays out like an opera twisting and turning through various landscapes, the whole time hitting us with an ever changing cacophony of diverse textures and soundscapes. This is one of those albums where we feel we are being moved towards something not merely a journey but something bigger. Everything is played on a very grand scale and to use the word journey is probably a fair understatement. The listener literally has no idea what is going to come next. We are taken from deep and dark evil atmospheres to high blasting peaks at breakneck speeds. If you are into the “Metal Epic” this is definitely the album for you.

One very refreshing thing Bedsore does on this effort is to bring many non-metal elements to the table as well. The instrumentation chosen for this cut ranges verily. We get to hear amazing off time drum signatures with plenty of other things thrown in including horns and keys, which bring a well roundedness to each track. The guitars are very well set in place and help bring an exclamation point to each track. They also help add to the emotional impact. The vocals are super dark, feeling like they are casting spells or summoning ethereal forces. Definitely wish I spoke Italian while listening to this one.

When I first heard the mix of different elements on this album I wondered if stuffing that many different ideas and aspects together would come off as forced but as a whole they pulled it off. Which again is the cornerstone of the Bedsore style. These epic tales due feel as though they may have started as improvisational rather than planned out compositions which I think adds to the surprise factor delivered in each piece. There are so many moving parts it approaches the border line of confusion before being pulled back at just the right moment, which lends itself to their particular style and delivery. This band approaches a Zappa type feel with everything going on but again everything feels in its place. I definitely look forward to the next epic saga this band has up their sleeves.
