The Will Calhoun Mali Project is the result of more than fifteen years of research and travel to Mali, during which Calhoun immersed himself in West African rhythms and traditions. The project blends Manding and Takamba rhythms with jazz, rock, blues, funk, hip-hop, and electronica into what Calhoun describes as a unique, totally grooving sonic experience. Following its recent evolution from a documentation effort into a full recording in Bamako, the project now hits the road for a Northeastern US run in May.
Central to the project is the long-term collaboration with Malian master musician and musical director Cheick Tidiane Seck. Over the years, the project has also featured Grammy-winning Malian superstar Oumou Sangaré, The Hunters, a secluded tribe from northern Mali, as well as Vieux Farka Touré and Madou Diabaté.
Calhoun is best known as the drummer and co-founder of the two-time Grammy-winning, multi-platinum rock band Living Colour, a role he continues to hold alongside the Mali Project.
