Shroud Eater – Face the Master

shroud eater EP cover face the master

Hailing from Florida, Shroud Eater is bringing new ideas as to how music can be consumed in both sound and how it is released. Over their six year career they have released limited CDs, special singles, and full albums on a variety of formats. The group is currently touring the east coast for their latest EP, Face the Master (Primitive Violence Records).

The first track ‘Face the Master’ is nothing too deep, but is enjoyable. Use of a movie sound clip to start it all off suggest that the EP is a miniature concept album. Harmony of all three members’ voices creates a trance like charm. Shroud Eater definitely knows what it is doing when it comes to playing metal. The vocals sound similar to Tony Foresta of Municipal Waste but with less thrash and more hardcore influence.

House of Endings’ doesn’t grab the listener quite as much but is still high quality. There is more variety in the sound of the track with buzzing guitars cutting in at some points and a more extended solo at the end. The only complaint is that the EP does not seem to come to a definitive end with this track; it seems like there is a missing third track.

Overall, the two song EP is enough to get listeners interested especially if they are already sludge metal fans. The sound is tight, professional, and has replay potential. Shroud Eater may sound similar to other sludge metal bands such as Kylesa but are still their own group. They are the future of sludge metal.

Municipal Waste Frontman Launches Liquid Arson Hot Sauce

tony forestas liquid arson hot sauce

Municipal Waste and Iron Reagan frontman Tony Foresta has released a brand of signature hot sauce called Liquid Arson, which is a collaboration with the Tears of Joy Hot Sauce brand. It is available for purchase here.

Foresta commented:

“This is a collaberation with me and Brian from The mighty “Tears of Joy” Hot Sauce in Austin, Texas. I’ve been wanting to work with him for years as I’ve always been a big fan of his store and the sauces he makes, The Sword‘s “Tears of Fire”, His Tequila Lime Sauce, Red Fang‘s “Night Destroyer” to name a few. Liquid Arson is an Italian flavored sauce that packs a punch but still has a lot of flavor. Good with almost anything to me personally I think it goes best with meatball subs, pizza or chicken parm. It’s kind of like a nuclear marinara sauce.”

Reed Mullin’s Teenage Time Killer Sign With Rise Records

Teenage Time Killer

Teenage Time Killer

Teenage Time Killer, an all star project headed by Corrosion of Conformity’s Mike Dean and Reed Mullin, has reportedly signed a record deal with Rise Records. The name was taken from a Rudimentary Peni song. The instrumental parts for the upcoming CD were recorded at Dave Grohl’s (FOO FIGHTERS, NIRVANA) Studio 606 in Northridge, California on the famous Sound City mixing board, which was the central focus of Grohl’s acclaimed “Sound City: Real To Reel” documentary. The effort was mastered by Bill Stevenson (THE DESCENDENTS, BLACK FLAG).

Reported artists who have contributed to the project include:

Randy Blythe (Lamb Of God)
Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters)
Corey Taylor (Slipknot/Stone Sour)
Neil Fallon (Clutch)
Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys)
Lee Ving (Fear)
Tommy Victor (Prong)
Nick Oliveri (Mondo Generator, ex-Queens Of The Stone Age/Kyuss)
Aaron Beam (Red Fang)
Pete Stahl (Scream, Goatsnake)
Greg Anderson (SUNN O))), Goatsnake)
Karl Agell (ex-Corrosion Of Conformity)
Tairrie B Murphy (My Ruin)
Mick Murphy (My Ruin)
Vic Bondi (Articles Of Faith)
Clifford Dinsmore (BL’AST!)
Pat Hoed (Brujeria)
Max Cavalera (Soulfly)
Tony Foresta (Municipal Waste/Iron Reagan)
Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein (The Misfits)
Keith Morris (Black Flag, etc.)
Phil Rind (Sacred Reich)

Asked if there are any plans for TEENAGE TIME KILLER to go on the road in support of the upcoming CD, Mullin told INDY Week: “Touring, I don’t know. Dave Grohl’s folks — his management and marketing people — are going to help us do all that with the thing. We recorded about 98 percent of it at his studio. They were talking about — since there’s so many people from so many different bands — maybe do something like ‘[Jimmy] Kimmel [Live!]’ and have three or four different singers come out at one time, like Jello and Lee Ving, maybe Randy from LAMB OF GOD, something like that. All the songs are real short, so we could do, easily, four songs and not go over. But you know, we’d have Brian Baker come out and play guitar, Pat Smear play bass or guitar or whatever. It’s pretty star-studded.”

He added: “It sounds really organic. It sounds like we — the people that we associated with for the different songs — wrote the songs together.”

Iron Reagan – The Tyranny of Will

Album Art

Being in a thrash metal band sure looks like a hell of a lot of fun. You get to pay homage to the metal greats, incite swirling circle pits and play songs with lyrics ranging from the horrors of nuclear war to the joys of being a borderline alcoholic. It’s no surprise then that the genre is still mightily popular despite not really evolving since the 80s.

In fact, it’s so much fun to be in a thrash band, that for some of those in the scene, one band is not enough. That’s presumably why Tony Foresta and Landphil from Municipal Waste formed Iron Reagan, who differ from their parent band by having slightly shorter songs and a cruder, garage-based approach. Or maybe it’s because they just want to rock the fuck out, which is exactly what sophomore record The Tyranny of Will (Relapse) does in spades.

Less concerned with the goofy, beer-obsessed cartoonish approach that is the Municipal Waste operandi, Iron Reagan play old-school thrash served up with an unhealthy mix of hardcore punk and the occasional dirty splash of crust and even hints of grind. Imagine the members of the modern thrash scene brawling with the likes of Stormtroopers of Death, D.R.I. and the Cro-Mags in a skate-park covered in flyers for old punk shows and you get the idea of what’s going on here.

There’s some great thrash workouts such as ‘Tyranny of Will’ ‘Close to Toast’ and ‘Miserable Failure’ while the brief yet savage blasts of ‘Glocking Out’ ‘Your Kid’s an Asshole’ and ‘Bored to Death’ will delight those who still scrawl giant X’s on their hands at gigs. Add in some hilarious lyrical concepts courtesy of the dearly departed Dave Brockie of GWAR and it’s no wonder why Foresta et al decided to make Iron Reagan more than just a side-project. And what a good decision that was, for The Tyranny of Will is a blast for all of its infectious 31 minutes.
