Ballers is the HBO series focusing on financial advisors to superstar athletes. The cast is led by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Rob Corddry. On the season four premiere, the main characters are courting a partnership with an extreme sports company led by comedian Russell Brand, and The Vans Warped Tour got a shout out. In addition, the now-defunct traveling tour, The Offspring, and Social Distortion were also name-checked. Warped Tour finished its last run as traveling tour last weekend after 23 years. Speculation on the future of Warped Tour has focused on the tour coming back someday as a destination festival. Continue reading

Biters – Electric Blood
It’s taken them 20 years to rediscover their midas touch, but of late Earache Records have been on a roll. A rock n’ roll, if you will. Whether Dig installed a Hot Tub Time Machine or not is open to scandalous rumour, but the label has been plucking 70’s rock success after retro-fuelled triumph, seeing the likes of The Temperance Movement, Rival Sons and Blackberry Smoke bring home the bourbon. Atlanta, Georgia’s Biters look set to be the latest in the line of acts on their roster recreating the magic of yesteryear, adding a street-smart proto-punk bite to their rock, rather than the smokey Southern vibe of their new label mates.
Kicking off with ‘Restless Hearts’, rocking a brilliant earworm of a bubblegum chorus, whose conception seems rooted in a world where punk and rock first met, as if Social Distortion had rocked out a couple The Sweet covers, Electric Blood manages to be effortlessly cool in its’ skin-tight Ts and tassle leather jackets. All through, the effortlessness with which the choruses lodge in the brain is to be admired, as Biters bring the pop of 80’s hair metal, mixed into a cocktail of the rough, sleaze and cool of The Rolling Stones and the panache (and tambourine) of 70’s Glam Rock.
Swagger, nonchalance and above all quality simple rock songs dominate the skyline of their début. ‘1975’ and ‘Heart Fulla Rock n’ Roll’ overload with lyrical cliché but this is no parody as they swing authentic, with the latter breaking out into a Gary Moore descending guitar harmony and old-school bass-led breakdown. Vocalist Tuk is part-cheerleader, part-rabble rouser and full-time tunesmith, his simple tones knowing their limitations, but infusing these straight-forward good time songs with the melodies and hooks they need.
Don’t go into Electric Blood expecting anything other than oh-so-cool pop rock, and a love of yesteryear. In the heaviness stakes, Biters are more Gaslight Anthem than Green Day, and at times both are brought to mind. With traces of Americana lacing tracks like ‘Dreams Don’t Die’ and nods to AC/DC (‘Electric Blood’) and Thin Lizzy (‘Space Age Wasteland’), this is an album that demands the top (or at least the windows) down, the open road, the speed-dial nudging naughty and voices raised in joyous communion.
These songs have teeth. Biters just bit hard, and these songs aren’t letting go.

Live Review: Refused and Turbonegro at Observatory – Santa Ana, CA
Turbonegro came out on fire as part of the dual Scandinavian rockers bill, as they threw down the gauntlet early and never looked back. The Norwegian punk rockers, now led by British frontman Tony Sylvester (aka Duke of Nothing), kept the crowd on its feet and the energy up high with his one liners in between songs referencing Los Angeles as ‘evil” (“City of Satan”) and drug innuendos referencing neighboring city of Fullerton and finding Social Distortion mainman Mike Ness. But the highlights of their set list included their rendition of the Dire Straits classic “Money for Nothing” along with the set closer “I Got Erection,” with the crowd chanting along with every word.
Swedish veteran hardcore punkers Refused managed to rile up the sold out venue with their angst driven sound and kept the energy on high all throughout their set. Frontman Dennis Lyxzen led the assault with his anger driven stylings, while the crowd eagerly screamed along word for word, as if their lives depended on what he was saying. Beginning with “Elektra,” off of their forthcoming album Freedom, and then diving head into “The Shape of Punk to Come” and “The Refused Party Program,” (off of The Shape of Punk to Come) as well other long time favorites triggered the crowd to respond with the crowd jumping along with the band and crowdsurfers tossed around alongside the occasional appearance by Lyxzen throughout the evening in the pit.
While this is Refused’s official return to the music scene after a couple of brief reunion runs and with a new album about to drop, they showed that they have hardly lost a step. While longtime fans may debate over the validity over whether their new material stands up to their past, tonight’s show hardly shows any signs of them missing a step. If Swedish punk were missing any of their heroes, Refused is definitely up for the challenge to fill the void. Plus one thing is for sure – unlike their song, Refused are anything but dead.
