Progressive Metal Supergroup Sons Of Apollo featuring Mike Portnoy and Derek Sherinian (formerly of Dream Theater) along with guitarist Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal (ex-Guns N’ Roses), bassist Billy Sheehan (Mr. Big, The Winery Dogs) and vocalist Jeff Scott Soto (Talisman, Trans Siberian Orchestra) have spent the last week in a marathon writing session for their new album. Portnoy posted to his Facebook account with a photo to break the news.* The bands’ acclaimed debut album Psychotic Symphony was released in 2017 via InsideOut Music. The Hall of Heavy Metal History Metal Hall of Fame Gala takes place every winter around The NAMM show in Anaheim, CA. Hosted by television, radio personality and heavy metal champion Eddie Trunk (Trunk Nation That Metal Show), and will feature appearances by heavy metal greats of today and years past. The event will feature performances by legendary drummers and Hall of Heavy Metal History inductees Carmine Appice and Vinny Appice, as well as a performance by hard rock/punk icon Jean Beauvoir. Sons of Apollo the supergroup of prog metal legends featuring members of Dream Theater, Guns N Roses Mr. Big, The Winery Dogs and Journey performed last weekend at the Ancient Theatre in Plovdiv, Bulgaria for an upcoming CD, DVD and Blu-ray. The group performed two sets separated by an intermission — one “regular” set, and another that featured an orchestra and choir. They ran through a set list of their own originals from their debut Psychotic Symphony (InsideOut), as well as covers of Dream Theate, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Queen, Ozzy, Van Halen, Aerosmith, Rainbow and more! They begin in Tampa, FL on February 3 as part of the Cruise To The Edge prog rock music cruise, which will be sailing to Belize and Costa Maya. Next, they will play Miami, FL on February 9 as part of the Monsters Of Rock Cruise Pre-Show party. Tickets for the upcoming tour dates go on sale this Friday, December 1 at 12pm local time. Psychotic Symphony is the long-awaited, highly anticipated release from what most people are calling the next new super group known as Sons of Apollo. I think the more fitting term is something more than human. For context Apollo (son of Zeus) was recognized as a god of music, truth, poetry, healing, the sun and the light so it would only be befitting to call these “Sons” the demigods of music; if that seems to be overboard for us mere mortals.
