Swedish Metal has really been having quite the moment. The past decade has seen Ghost elevated from underground arena rockers to literal arena headliners, a much-awaited Candlemass reunion, and the continued success of road-hardened stalwarts Opeth, Meshuggah, and Amon Amarth. Diehard fans of Scandinavian metal, particularly the more progressive and doom-oriented flavors, have been abuzz about Katatonia’s globetrotting shows.

This was a great eclectic night and while I am well versed and have seen both Dälek and Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs a handful of times the local opener Taraneh I was unfamiliar with and pleasantly surprised by. Their visual appearance didn’t necessarily fit the mellow shoegaze vibe that they were throwing down, but that’s just a learning curve for a band and nothing to fault them for. All in all I dug it. It was mellow and flowy and a nice different way to start the show.
One of the fiercest, best bands in the world right now is Austin Texas’ crossover thrashers Power Trip. Tonight they kickoff two completely sold-out shows shows in Brooklyn New York at Elsewhere club. Direct support on the tour is coming from Sheer Mag, Fury and Red Death. The band is out on the road supporting their recent compilation album Opening Fire 2008 -2014 via Southern Lord Records.
