Alkaline Trio – Is This Thing Cursed?

As we move into the Post-Warped Tour era (don’t write letters, we know it’s coming back as a festival in a year or two), it’s a comfort to know that there are still classic 1990s pop-punk bands you can count on. The mid-to-later half of that decade was full of great punk bands with a lot of fire, and some killer melodies. One of those bands was Chicago’s Alkaline Trio, led by founding vocalist/guitarist Matt Skiba, also doing time in Warped mainstay Blink-182. Their ninth and most recent release, Is This Thing Cursed? put out on their longtime label Epitaph, feels like a win early on. In spite of a five-year gap between albums, the enthusiasm of the band can be felt in the songs and was intended to recapture the feel of their earliest work. Continue reading

Seminal Detroit ska-hardcore outfit Suicide Machines will be doing a run of dates with Break Anchor, Derek Grant and Bastardous in April. They will be doing their 1996 album Destruction By Definition in full. Also joining them will be longtime drummer Derek Grant (Alkaline Trio), who played with the band from 1992-1998.

Suicide Machines officially took an indefinite hiatus in 2006, but have been playing a handful of reunion and local shows periodically since 2009. The band’s guitarist/vocalist, Jason Navarro, will be pulling double duty on this tour playing guitar for Break Anchor as well. Break Anchor is set to release a new full-length album sometime this year, but details on that are still under wraps.

Alkaline Trio drummer Derek Grant is releasing his debut record called Breakdown on January 20, 2015 via Red Scare Industries. He is known as the drummer for Alkaline Trio since 2001, and has played in The Vandals and Suicide Machines, as well as a guitarist for Face To Face and The Gaslight Anthem.

Grant explains:

“‘Breakdown‘ just seemed appropriate for what I was going through at the time. My relationship had fallen apart and I was dealing with it in some very unhealthy ways. The upside was I started writing lyrics for the first time in nearly a decade.”
